Fraudulent use of card

Sorry to learn of your misfortune.
Don't jump to any conclusions about how it happened.
No matter what report it to the police and let your card issuer know you've done this.
If it's your credit card details that have been used, then you won't be held liable. (Unless it is considered you've failed to comply with card T&Cs re - internet security - Anti virus etc).
Even if your credit card has been cloned (as you still have it) and used to withdraw cash at an ATM then the most you can be held liable for (as it's a credit and not debit card) is £50. But be warned card issuers are starting to wriggle with regards to PIN negligence.
Like millions of others you never use a credit card for cash, however crooks do. You might like to consider telling your credit card issuer that you want your replacement card to be Chip & Signature. It's your choice.0 -
What advantage is there to a Chip & Signature card?
It's far easier to use a stolen card signing for a purchase than guessing a 1 in 10,000 PIN.
How do they actually work anyway, I presume it tells the retailer that you need to sign for a purchase when they put it into the chip & PIN machine?0 -
The advantages of a Chip & Signature credit card are as follows:
You can't get money from an ATM, but neither can a crook.
If a crook wants to use a stolen Chip & Signature card at a Chip and PIN compliant shop then he or she has to face down shops staff.
Disputed transactions where a PIN is used with a stolen or cloned card is becoming more and more common place. Has anyone ever read anything anywhere about a genuine cardholders signature being questioned with the cardholder?
Chip & Signture Cards work thus:
Place the card in the Chip reader as you would with a Chip & PIN card. The retailer has no idea what type of card you're using until a transaction slip is produced for you to sign.0 -
Is there any way to tell by looking at the card that it's Chip & Signature?0

Ahh all is clear now!
But, when you insert one of these cards into an ATM, does it just reject it or does it still ask for a PIN?
Cause you could test it to see if it was a PIN card or not......0 -
Am I not covered for fraudulent transactions on my Debit Card?I would if I could but I can't so I won't!0

Some card issuers actually supress the PIN for use in shops, but allow PIN use at ATMs.
What I do here is return the PIN intact and ask for written verification, therefore if I don't know the PIN, I can't compromise it.
Re Liability for Credit Card use your right, your covered by the Consumer Credit Act. Debit cards are slightly different, and it's easier for the banks to wriggle.
