oh get a grip...does it matter that they dont have baskets? if you dont like it, dont use it..Aldi have always charged for their bags (ditto Lidl), if you feel they are too small, bring your own, and if no baskets, then just use a box
if you dont like it, then go elsewhere0 -
the thing you are complaining about is why there cheap.0

Why don't you get a grip, I wasn't really moaning, just asking if all stores are the same :P Some people are so quick to jump on others. Why don't I ask if I'm entitled to compo due to the inconvenience then it'll give people like you a real excuse to have a go?
And actually, this time it did matter that they didn't have a basket because I had to carry all my stuff around the shop. If you read my latest post you'll see I said there was no boxes available otherwise I would have happily used one, and I didn't have my own bags. Next time I'll make sure to accommodate for the lack of baskets but it seems silly for a supermarket to have none available.
Incidentally, my other experience in that store was a good one, I went to the till and asked the lady if she could change my shrapnel for a pound coin for the trolley, she gave me one out of the till without taking my change and said 'just give me it back when you pay for your shopping' :eek:D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0 -
Do what I do - if you only need a small shop, empty one of the boxes at the front of the shop and use that to carry your purchases.x0

I didn't have a pound on me so couldn't get a trolley but when I went inside the store there were no baskets near the entrance. I looked near the tills but there was none there either, I don't think the shop had any. Because of this I had to carry my shopping around in my arms, dropping it all over the floor. I also had to leave quite a lot of things that I wanted to buy behind as I couldn't carry them all. Are all Aldi stores like this, it seems a bit silly not to have baskets available.
Issue of baskets - aldi dont have baskets(stores ive worked in dont have them but there are a few), few reasons why 1 they somehow grow legs go walkies, 2 they cost money to make the baskets and 3 if they walkies the store then has to replace them which is even more money. All the stores are the same, same with lidl and possibly netto. You could have asked one of the assistants to change some silver into pound coin.
Also have two minor moans while I'm at it - Carrier bags. Cost 3p each which normally I don't mind paying, but they're tiny compared to normal supermarket carriers, just feels like they're trying to get you to buy as many as possible. If you have to pay for something that's ususally free, at least make them as good!
carrier bags are 3pence as they cost to make so by doing this they can keep the food prices down, you are perfectly able to take a box off teh shelf or the cardboard trolley and fill it up or if you have a few items you put them ont the side by the window then pay and pack it there
Secondly, the packing space at the end of the checkout is absolutely tiny. I wasn't bothered so much as I wasn't buying a lot, but if you were in by yourself buying a week's shopping I can imagine how utterly frustrating it would be trying to pack from the tiny little shelf. They have a big shelf along the back wall, are you expected to carry all your shopping over and pack it on there?
seriously where have you been for the past 10 years ? in a hole somewhere(dont mean to be rude), aldi and lidl have been like this for ages, its like that for a reason which is that most people who shop there have a trolley and once 1 item is scanned it goes into the trolley and same for second, third and forth etc etc until everything is scanned
Anyway, rant over, just wondering if anyone else's local supplies baskets for it's customers?
you either get used to aldi/lidl or you dont0 -
I only had about 70p in change on me, otherwsie I would have asked for a pound coin for a trolley
I didn't realise you were allowed to take boxes off the shelf and use them to carry your shopping but I'll definately do that next time if I find myself without a bag or something. The thing is, how are you supposed to know this if you've never been there before? I've only ever been to that Aldi once and used a trolley then, same goes for Lidl. It just seemed a little strange to me! I don't mind paying for a carrier and can see why they're charging, obviously if you're used to shopping there you'd likely take your own bags with you, I was just saying you can't fit as much in them as you can the free ones from say Sainsbury's.
As for where I've been the past 10 years, I didn't do my own food shopping when I was 12 :rotfl: The Aldi's only opened recently so up until now I've shopped at the big supermarkets and gotten used to their ways of doing things, all these weird things threw me off a bit! But now I know, so next time I'll be prepared for itD'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0 -
I've always assumed that the lack of baskets is a staff/cost saver as baskets would need to be moved from till to door by staff whereas trolleys are replaced by the customer when reclaiming the pound coin. But then there's theft as stated above; my local Lidl had baskets but they went walkies.0

They have different price bags at the counter (underneath) If I find myself without a bag then I take two 9p bags as I enter the store and put my shopping in them then when they are full I know that is as much as I can carry home.0

ClaireBear - Aldis and Lidles near me have never had baskets. I agree if you havent shopped there before it can be a little confusing!
I love Aldis - I do my main shop at the local (5mins away) store and the staff are friendly and helpful the shop is clean and you are through the till in minutes! they dont mind if you raid the shelves for boxes and any spares are usually put under the shelf in packing area.
I too had probs with change for trolley - and upon asking the cashier to change a twenty she just gave me a pound from the till and said to give it back after i had shopped!!! would Asda do that?
I have a couple of trolley tokens now in my bag - and I bought a couple of Aldis large shopper bags about three years ago and they are still in use (which causes some merriment if i go to Lidls as I take the Aldi bags).0 -

your are perfectly fine to take a box off the shelf and use that, the baskets, the bags etc are extra costs that if wer ein place the cost of the food would go up,
mayeb what i said re where you been was a bit too far and i apologise, im sure if you had aksed nicely they would have lent you a pound and then give it back once done, you could even try and find a trolley token and keep it on you(or in your purse, car keys) all the time0
