Baskets in Aldi?

On my way home from work tonight I decided to pop into Aldi and pick up a little bit of shopping. I didn't have a pound on me so couldn't get a trolley but when I went inside the store there were no baskets near the entrance. I looked near the tills but there was none there either, I don't think the shop had any. Because of this I had to carry my shopping around in my arms, dropping it all over the floor. I also had to leave quite a lot of things that I wanted to buy behind as I couldn't carry them all. Are all Aldi stores like this, it seems a bit silly not to have baskets available.

Also have two minor moans while I'm at it - Carrier bags. Cost 3p each which normally I don't mind paying, but they're tiny compared to normal supermarket carriers, just feels like they're trying to get you to buy as many as possible. If you have to pay for something that's ususally free, at least make them as good!

Secondly, the packing space at the end of the checkout is absolutely tiny. I wasn't bothered so much as I wasn't buying a lot, but if you were in by yourself buying a week's shopping I can imagine how utterly frustrating it would be trying to pack from the tiny little shelf. They have a big shelf along the back wall, are you expected to carry all your shopping over and pack it on there?

Anyway, rant over, just wondering if anyone else's local supplies baskets for it's customers?

It depends on the Aldi - the one in Manchester city centre does have baskets as it's more of a 'drop in' type shop, but the other ones in the area don't provide them. They do have the trolleys you can get with a £1 deposit.

Yes, that's exactly what you are meant to do.

At our local ones, you put the shopping through the till, bung it all back in the trolley/basket, and make your way to the larger area like you mention, in order to pack it all, therefore not taking up time and space at the tills.

Did you ask anyone if there were baskets available?

Manchester city centre Aldi is the only one I know that has baskets, (been to hounslow, yorkshire ones and other ones in Manchester). Personally I think it would be so much easier if they did have basket in store but then again I always end up buying more than a basket full!

Yes, they do expect you to pack your shopping on the back shelf - I do believe the staff have scanning time targets to meet. Hence why the scan and expect you to put your shopping back in the troll and go pack it on the shelf.

As for the carrier bags, if you think there bad, go buy some from netto. Then you'll know what bad carriers are. lol. I think most supermarket carrier bags are rubbish except morrisons.

They don't have baskets in my local Aldi, if I only want a couple of bits I grab an empty box. That's what people do at my local Aldi. My box is always overflowing and I always wish I had got a trolley after all.

I've never been in Aldi where there is baskets, I usually find an empty box (lot's around as everything is displayed in boxes), or I take in my own carrier usually advertising Asda, Morrisons or Sainsburys, fill the carrier with what I want to buy then tip it out on the conveyor belt, than pack it up in my carrier.
The short area at the end of the tills is designed for trolleys (again), you empty your trolley then put the empty trolley at the end and the cashier puts your items straight in the trolley then you take your full trolley to the packing are to pack into your bags.
The queues in Aldi are the worst in any supermarket when they are busy. Sometimes the queue is so long it prevents people walking round the store properly.
I would boycott it except my cat loves Aldi biscuits best.

    Lidl dont have baskets either.

As for the carrier bags, they charge for them to encourage customers to bring their own bags in, perhaps more people would if they increased the price to 20P each and gave it to charity.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I always keep a pdsa trolley coin in my purse for that very reason. My local Aldi doesn't have baskets but does have boxes. It's a lovely store as well.

I hate it when I go in for a few items and have to get a trolley can't understand why they don't have baskets and I agree the carrier bags are useless, I also get really annoyed with the staff as they try and rush you through really quickly and its usually very rare if they acknowledge you, they all seem to work like robots, not my favourite supermarkets I must say.

I see, I didn't realise this is what you were meant to do, everyone seemed to be packing at the till. Didn't mean to make that sound awful by the way, reading it back I sound dead snobby :rotfl: You can tell I don't shop there much! I was going to ask about the baskets but there was only one member of staff that I could see in the store, and that was the lady at the tills who was serving customers. Plus I don't really like making a scene but there was no baskets in any of the places they're normally found in supermarkets so I just assumed there was none at all. I was looking for boxes too as they normally have some underneath the packing shelf in Lidl but there was none of those to be found either :rotfl:

It's funny because I normally have one of those trolley coin things but it broke the other day after using it at Sainsburys. From now on I'll take my own 'bag for life' type shopping bags, but as I said I hadn't planned on going in and decided last minute to grab something for tea tonight. I guess I was just being really unlucky but I did feel a bit silly carrying my shopping around in my arms, is there some specific reason why they don't have baskets?
