Just for the purpose of the argument i wanted to add that althrough I live 20 mins from Manchester the job i have taken is 20mins in the other direction (into dark depths of Lancashire) Darwin actually, not exactly a thriving place but still seems to be a shortage of people who are willing to do something other than claim JSA.
Well I guess that I should be pleased really that there are so many job shy people in this country as it means i will never be struck to find work!!

How do you know what other people do or claim?

I thought you and your fiance were going to live in the States or Oz? So when you do, people and jobs in this country won't matter will they?

Hi. I'm a bit scared to voice my opinion on this as I'm new here and I don't want to get verbally pounced on but here goes...

I am a 23 year old mother of two boys. I live in a housing association house on the outskirts of Rochdale and am currently living on benefits.

From what I have just written, most people who have the same opinion as the OP's will probably now see me as a chavvy benefits scrounger who is a single mother and only opened her legs for the sake of a council house etc. These same people usually assume that I don't want a job and have no education and am totally ignorant of all those amazing tax payers who slave away for me to sit at home every day, smoking fags and watching Jeremy Kyle. Does that sound about right?

This is who I really am:
I am a MARRIED 23 year old mother of two totally planned and wanted boys. The eldest boy has Autism that I am NOT currently claiming DLA etc for. I was in employment but was forced to move to be closer to my father who was recently diagnosed with Cancer. I waited in private rented accomodation that was totally unsuitable for my families' needs for nearly two years before I got the HA property I am currently in. I used to smoke but I quit last June for the sake of my childrens' health and our finances. I have EIGHT GCSE's which I am very proud of. (Six of which are A-C grades). I know that's not a degree or an O-level but it's something! I have NEVER worn burberry but I do occasionally watch a bit of Jeremy Kyle!:rotfl:
There should be no problem with me getting a job huh?!

I applied at my local ASDA the other week. They were advertising for several roles so I thought I was in with a chance at least.
    I got turned down.
I rang them up to ask why.
I was informed that they were impressed with my application but I had been competing against approximately 400 OTHER APPLICANTS!!! Some of which were more qualified than me.

Doesn't that prove anything?! Doesn't it show that it's not that easy all the time OP? Please don't lump everyone who is on benefits into the same boat! A lot of us ARE trying desparately to find work-hence the 400+ people trying for a job at ASDA. It's just the few who are the real scroungers that make the rest of us look bad!
Sorry for the long rant but this thread has really upset me in places where I'm feeling very discriminated against just for asking for some financial help from the DWP. I DO appreciate the tax payers-I've been one myself but I feel people should be allowed to claim benefits without being ridiculed and hated for it IF I AM MAKING A REAL EFFORT TO LOOK FOR WORK.

    Please understand.

I can echo MrsMalthouse's comments about the amount of people applying for jobs. I also live in the North West and a Tesco Metro opened near us last year. Within a few days, more than 700 people had applied for around sixty jobs - and some of those jobs were going to people already employed by Tesco (internal promotions and relocations). I believe that the final amount of applicants was almost 1000.

Another job, early last year, as an administrator/receptionist for a small charity - just one post, but almost eighty applicants.

These also illustrate my earlier post that mentioned closing dates, shortlisting, interviewing, etc - hence my disbelief that the OP started looking for work on Thursday and had several interviews on Friday.

At times like this I really miss those rolling eyes/shaking head smilies!!

You don't know what other people are doing unless you know every JSA claimant in Darwin.
You have experience in the area (chef/catering) many do not have this.
You found a job which fits into your life, the hours you require, for some this job will not.

And finally you "will never be struck to find work"??

Whilst i do admire your get up and go attitude i do feel you are lacking in humility, i think however that you are smarting for a fight with this thread.

As has been proved by numerous other post you got lucky that a job that matched your exact skills was advertised and they employed you straight away.

Well done but stop been an a hole about it.
