    The 500MB usage means, you can read and reply to thousands of emails, download 24 Google maps and read 8,000 BBC News stories.

    Guys can someone with some technical knowledge give a realistic idea of what 500mb gives you on a smartphone. I.e. without just guessing, something concrete that we can put to Vodafone and try an get them to stop printing what they reckon.

    Web pages / you tube / iplayer / etc etc

    Thanks

    Hi mate,

    I work as a software developer... I can tell you exactly what 500mb is...

    500mb = 0.5 average quality movies
    500mb = 500 average quality photos...
    500mb = 100 average quality music tracks
    500mb = 1200 BBC home pages
    500mb = 1140 Vodafone home pages
    500mb = 1 BBC iPlayer episode

    N1 CaptainD! Shame you had to give the phone back though! :(

    He did not have to. The phone was not part of the contract, stupid of anyone to send their phone back.

    Average email is between 10-75k, seems alot but you have to remember all the additional formatting and header information. Then add in the fact of the web page you download to view it on.
    http://email.about.com/od/emailstatistics/f/What_is_the_Average_Size_of_an_Email_Message.htm

    So it is just for the email of 75k, 6826 emails.

    For photos, on average

    1 megapixel image, 1,250 downloads
    3 megapixel image, 737 downloads
    6 megapixel image, 200 downloads
    12 megapixel image, 100 downloads
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/learnmore/onthego.mspx

    This web page alone, 1.18MB so you can view less than 500 MSE Forum pages

    IPlayer streams at 800 kbps, which is 97KB a second.
    Meaning a 1 hour program uses 341MB!

    IPlayerHD streams at 3200 kbps, which is 390KB a second
    Meaning a 1 hour program uses 1.3GB! (staggering)

    IPlayer Radio streams at 128 kbps which is 15KB a second
    Meaning a 1 hour program uses 52MB.

    So you can listen to only 10 hours of digital radio.

    Haven't actually sent it back yet....... they are picking it up tomorrow- I dunno realistically if I could keep it, I just can't be bothered with them any more!

    I'm more than happy just to send it back and wash my hands of it if it means waving goodbye to vodafone

    I haven't had to give 30 days notice or anything, just a straightforward (he says) termination at no cost and they are getting my pac(?) code for me

    From bitterwallet:

    They keep mentioning that only 3% of their users exceed this 500MB cap.
    The number of UK customers they had by early 09 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodafone) was 18.7 million.
    This means that at least 561,000 people go over the 500MB limit. Doesn’t sound like such a small figure now does it?
    Also, bear in mind that they’re talking about their full customer based, and I’d assume the majority hasn’t moved on to smartphones yet. If they based their stats on number of smartphone customers that exceed the 500MB I’m sure the percentage would be a lot higher.
    Finally, as someone mentioned earlier, if the majority of their customers don’t exceed the limit, why bother bringing a change that’s just causing a shitstorm of bad PR for them?

    I've not had my desire outside my house yet, so havn't had it on 3G only wireless...just read this on the vodafone website, can someone tell me is it even relevant for a phone like the desire??

    How can I make sure my phone is viewing made-for-mobile web pages?

    Getting on the internet > Connecting on your phone > General information on mobile internet > How can I make sure my phone is viewing made-for-mobile web pages?

    Just make sure your phone's web browser connection settings are using the WAP APN - see below - not the Internet APN, and enter the link https://www.live.vodafone.com, or set it as your homepage.

    If you can see your Mobile Internet homepage - then it's working. When you visit your first page outside of our site, we'll ask you if you are happy for us to tailor the pages for you. If you agree (you'll only need to accept once) then we'll tailor as many pages as possible for you after that.

    Pay monthly and Business
    APN = wap.vodafone.co.uk
    username = wap
    password = wap
    homepage = live.vodafone.com

    Pay as you go
    APN = pp.vodafone.co.uk
    username = wap
    password = wap
    homepage = live.vodafone.com

    A network engineer reporting here:

    Honest to God, I just downloaded www . vodafone . co . uk on my HD2 with "SPB Wireless Monitor (data monitoring software)" running in the background, and it did show me a 1MB usage figure! So if I am allowed to step on your toes (sorry mate), its
    500MB = "www . vodafone . co . uk" loaded 500 times.

    For those willing to try something similar, you can download a 15 day trial of SPB Wireless Monitor by googling. It works on Windows Mobile only as far as I know!

    Strange... Are you sure something else didn't kick in like an email sync?

    Maybe I got the mobile version of their homepage... I tried it from my N900...
