Yes you may get away with in your hand luggage, but unless you have been to states within the last last or 5 weeks then you will have a hard time proving you bought it on a previous trip, plus how many people actually take the packaging and reference manuals with them on holiday. And if they were to search, they would find a sales receipt. Which you will need to keep hold in the case that something goes wrong with the iPad.

A good place for buying Tech or anything from the states is a place called Bundlebox http://www.bundlebox.com/

You buy your item online from US website, gets delivered to Bundlebox, they calculate you of the VAT & import, then you arrange shipment and pay the duties and shipping. Bit like having a PO box in the states.

I did say post the box etc. home.

Plus, how many people on this forum have been stopped by customs. Unless you're looking exceptionally nervous like a drug mule I doubt you would get caught and as someone has pointed out you would be allowed an iPad anyway.

Buy one I would say, with the OS upgrade due soon it would be a pretty neat device if you get MS Word on it, buy one of those wireless keyboards and the apple cover that turns into a stand you're pretty sorted.

iPad will be great for quickly looking up something whilst watching TV, I call it sofa surfing.

Watch out for customs. They are ruthless and as I said if you have a problem with it Apple UK do not have to and most likely wont honour the warranty.

jeanniebeanie I can assure you that Apple UK are not obliged to honour warranty, it is a limited international warranty. I have seen many people caught out. Usually out of good customer service they do, but I know people who have been caught out.

    If you seek
service in a country that is not the country of purchase, you will comply with all applicable export laws
and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges.
For international service, Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable
products and parts that comply with local standards. In accordance with applicable law, Apple may require
that you furnish proof of purchase details and/or comply with registration requirements before receiving
warranty service. Please refer to the accompanying documentation for more details on this and other matters
    on obtaining warranty service.

That's the warranty Im referring to. Apple are generally very good and have even known them to fix an iPhone under warranty that was dropped in the bath, but they didn't have to.

I'm just saying be careful as I know someone who bought an iPhone overseas and when the battery failed a week later they had to send back to country of origin.

So try and work that out, dropping in a bath careless and not covered, faulty battery which was their problem and not sorted.

  • Ok I think there is a little confusion here over a LIMITED warranty.
My previous post was from Apple's own terms and conditions which I gave the link to.

    This is the LIMITED part.

This warranty does not apply: (a) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to
    a defect in materials or workmanship;
    (b) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents
and broken plastic on ports; (c) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (d) to damage caused
by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes .......

I suspect the issue with the battery was linked to the above in red, but after only a week should have been argued as 'defect in materials or workmanship' or maybe they could not produce a receipt?
Anyway, thank you for your concern, but I wouldn't be worried - I would print off a copy of their own terms and conditions and present them with it if needed!

Hi I have been lucky enough to have had my iPad 64gb for about 6 weeks now, yes I am a true apple fan iPhone, iPods, apple tv, iMac etc etc but I will be as unbiased as poss.

    Good bits
It is amazingly tactile and user friendly
The fastest and most pleasant web browser i have ever used
Screen clarity while watching HD movies is stunning
Photo frame mode & photo programme are stunning

    Bad bits
The lack of flash is a pain in the butt
Current app availability is good but no uk based ones, obviously this will improve come uk launch
    Battery can drain quite quickly

The above is not an exhaustive list and I have not been too techie but it's just my initial view point.

It is an amazing piece of kit and everyone who has had a play with it fallls in love with it, but as posts have said it is an oversized iPhone, yes it does a lot more, has a much better screen but the basics are the same, if you are looking for a great way to surf the net, view facebook, watch movies, play music, play some great games with motion control ( the movies and games come in very handy for keeping the kids quite on long journeys ) then it is for you, as a poster has already said most people will already know if it's for them or not, if in doubt then probably not for you.

If anyone has any specific questions please feel free to mail me I will answer the best I can.

With regards to importing,i got a great deal on ebay ( yes i was amazed to ) and when it got to the uk i got stung with nearly £50 from customs and it got held up in customs for 4 days !!!

Thanks for posting. Everything you have said is exactly as I would expect apart from the battery life -I read it should be 10 hours plus, which would be pretty good for me.

It's good to hear from someone who has had several weeks to find their way around one and of course after the UK launch the apps should start coming pretty fast, so it should get a whole lot better. I go a week on Sat and will be travelling about 900 miles, so have bookmarked all the Apple stores en route in case availability is not good.

The UK price is due to be announced on Monday of course, so after all that's been posted about Warranty and Duty (which I have got covered) it may be that there is no great advantage to me bringing one back! at least I will know before I go.

    Enjoy yours Matt!
