I do all my clothes washing on a Sunday. I never iron. Waste of time.0

I wash everything that says "handwash" in the shower. I just fling it in there, then next time I shower, I stamp about on it, singing loudly (this part is vital to the process) Washing gets all my lovely shower gel smell after me, then it gets a rinse after me, then before I get up I sling it over the shower hose to drip dry. Later on I hang it outside.

I wash underwear and socks after one wear. Most of small fry's clothes onyl manage one wear - he is 2 and VERY messy!, tshirts often get one wear too as I dont' wear(need) a bra so they go next to my skin!
Worktops for both of us only get one wear, we both work in those horrible types of offices full of stale smells and after 10 hrs in a top there's no way I want to put it back on the following day.
Bedsheets get changed about 2-3 times a MONTH
towels go through two people's showers and then used on floor to mop up spills/dry feet.
I do about 21-25 loads a week.DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

Hi.. we family of 4 and wash undies and tops after one wear.. bottoms after a couple of wears except in case of youngest (7) after one. Bedding weekly / 10 days towels use my judgement... if in girls bathroom more often than those in ours!!!0

I'm shocked at the amount of washing somepeople do
There's 4 of us - and I'd say I do around 5/6 washes a week. I've got a large drum on the machine which helps.
DD's change uniform mid week unless dirty/smelly before, they change into play clothes when they get home and these normally last 5 evenings - they're only out on bikes/skates/at park so a bit of grime doesnt matter. PJ's for them last 3/4 nights.
DH has washable suits but has 5 of them so they get worn for a day, hung and aired and used again the next week, I wash one a week to keep the roatated. He has a clean shirt/pants/socks daily. When he gets in he changes into trackies and a t-shirt that last him all week (unless he's gardening).
As I don't work and am normally at home or in the garden I can make trousers/shorts last for 4/5 days, normally have a clean top each day (another messy eater), bras last me 2 days - pants/socks daily. I normally have a "going out outfit" that I'll use 2/3 times a week as I pop into town or the likes but I make it last all week by changing out of it as soon as I get in.
Bedding I do every 2 weeks and stagger it - this week is our beds week - next will be DD's beds.
Towels/flannels/bathmat- Weekly - with those go microfibre clothes (don't use fabric softener on that wash)
Sofa covers come of twice a year - everything else is spot cleaned on them.
I iron most things i.e. shirts/t-shirts/trousers/skirts but no bedding etc.
I always wash everything at 30% with less than half the powder and we're another family that don't smell."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Why don't you put plastic bibs on the kids? I keep mine in their PJs for breakfast, but put bibs on them too, so the PJs last all week as no majors spills on them. The bibs just need a quick wash with the rest of the washing-up.
I'm sure my 12 (not too bad but one of the others usually gets her!), 11 (has cordination problems), 10 (just plain messy), 8 (apsergers) and 6 (wets the bed every nigt anyway) year olds would LOVE that.. and the messiest eater I have is hubby.. I make him take his shirt off to eat.. he can wipe his chest and if he spills something hot down himself it is his own fault lol.
these get up get their breakfast and then get dressed.. their clothes ared left out on a night.
I do do that for littlies though.. but they still end up covered on their legs or something..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Crumbs! I can't believe how much washing everyone has to do. I have to use a launderette (as I live in a rented hovel) and can only really afford to go once a week. I own two week's worth of undies so it's not a problem and I definitely don't smell!0

Just an interesting fact I heard on the radio this morning :Only 45% of people dry their clothes outdoors in the summer, 55% carry on drying indoors.
:eek::eek::eek:
1. Some of us who live in flats don't have the facility to dry things outside. We have no communal garden, balcony or any outside area at all. I suppose we could put the airer on the pavement outside the front door *lol*
2. One word: Hayfever! Even when I had somewhere outside to dry things I never did in the spring/summer/autumn because as clothes dry outside, pollen gets caught in the fibres and if you suffer badly (as I do) then its not pleasant if your clothes and bedding make your symptoms even worse.
I do believe as someone has already said that our obsession with hygiene is actually causing more health problems - particularly allergies. We eliminate so much bacteria from our environment (constant cleaning/draconian food safety precautions) that our immune systems simply aren't prepared and cannot cope when we do encounter some.0 -
I agree with the increase in allergies being caused by being over clean
A little bit of muck never hurt anybody :rotfl:
I was just shocked at the high percentage of people who don't dry outside as it's the norm in our familyCreeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
I used to laugh at my Grandmother, she would never have a washing machine as they " washed holes into your clothes" Judging by the amount of washing some of you do I reckon she may well be right!!!!!!!
For goodness sake get a life, there are two of us and I do 3-4 loads a week. I do iron most things and certainly change underwear daily, but bedding every other day why??
Come and have a sniff of Oh and me we dont smell I can assure you and I have time to do allsorts of things instead of washing all day.
HEAR HEAR!!
There is 4 of us and obviously underwear etc needs to be washed daily for personal hygeine and to save on bullying, but really there are so many better things to be doing then washing clothes...
Reading some of these comments, people must spend somewhere between 10- 50 hours washing clothes a week!!! Seems mad to me..
We do work / school clothes Friday night, ( 5 shirts, trousers etc) a midweek white and a midweek coloured and then 1 other weekend wash..
1 thing I found did help me though, and save time was putting up another line in the garden. This means that over the summer (or anytime it isnt raining really) we do the washing and then pile up wet clothes (only for an hour) which we hang up when we have 2 or 3 loads...
This means you can blast the washing instead of it taking over your life!!
As for ironing, one does ironing one does dinner... takes an hour max!:D0
