I'm coming at this from a somewhat different angle to most of you..its just me, and I'm at uni so don't have my own WM.

I do 2 washes every fortnight.
Anything dirty goes in washbag until washday when its split into approximate darks/lights, but as both go in at 40degrees, its not a set rule about colours. Undies changed daily and tops/trousers depend entirely on what I've done in them, In that time, I will use 2 bathtowels, and have the same bedding for the 2 weeks.
I wouldn't call myself dirty at all, particularly not compared to some of the students here, but judging by the standards of some of you on here you would probably think I am. But, I'm happy with my cleanliness :)

I can *see* the cost more easily perhaps than you tho...each wash costs £1.60. I also use a tumble dryer, but as some stuff is non-tumble, I only use 1 TD load....and thats £1. Overall its £4.20 each laundry day for me. If I did any more, it would get too costly for me.
One thing...that sets pulses racing...that gets hearts pounding...for which there is no substitute...only YOU can provide...blood.

Holstar, don't blame you, that is expensive!

In my opinion (just mine of course) if it was wasteful usage of electricity I would be bothered (for example a friend of mine is very eco friendly she wouldn't consider using the internet as it's a waste having the laptop/PC on) but when it comes to my kids being clean I am bothered. Witnessed a little boy who had been to school 3 days in a row with the same dirty marks on his clothes being picked on last week, kids calling him a 'dirty pig' etc. Wouldn't have that for my kids.

I think different levels of what people consider to be clean and not is up to them, also peoples circumstances are very different, having 2 boys with special needs who need chagning regularly I know this all too well, unless someones house is fully powered by say solar power or wind power, I ignore comments made on an internet forum with regards to my electricity usage, I choose to 'waste' mine on keeping my childrens clothing clean, they choose to use it online, before you ask no I'm not using mains supply now :) . The way my Nana put it just to be OS about it 'They've got no room to talk'. I doubt anyone would do more washing than they need to just to say they have done it, or more than they feel they need to for enviromental reasons, but people choose to overuse PCs, laptops etc on a regular basis.

I make my effort my way when it comes to enviromental issues, I don't try to be pushy with my ideas on others (for example I wouldn't consider charging rechargable batteries at home but others do ;) I use soapnuts which many don't think get clothes clean same as using a 30 minute wash) and I don't expect to be told what to do or that what I do is wrong by other people. I don't mind having suggestions made, but find it laughable when people try to blame others specific actions on climate change etc.

Oh an my favourite tshirt that I own and wash regularly because I wear it regulary says 'Don't preach to me until you're perfect' I love it :) so I wear it a lot & it gets washed a lot.

As for comments from people about smelling etc, I hear people saying regularly about other people smelling all the time, I always hate the thought of the day when either I don't hear them talking (as they are probably talking about me) or that I hear them say it about me, wouldn't like either to happen. I have worked with people who have been sacked because they didn't wash their clothes and they stunk.
One day I might be more organised...........

Pj's are worn for roughly the same length of time as your knickers (roughly 7-7 for the children).. would you wear knickers a second day??? GROSS!!! You itch your bum more during the night than you do during the day and most likely sweat more too.. especially in warmer months.. doesn't bear thinking about! YUK!

Then the children eat their breakfast wearing their pj's so they don't dribble down their school clothes that are fresh on, so the pj's HAVE to be washed.. there is no way I would make them wear pj's with stale milk dribbles down them that is pure nastiness. So no it isn't ridiculous it is hygiene!

    ...

I am more concerned about the inefficiency of my central heating and hot water boilers at the moment than whether my WM's are on a dozen times a day! Also how much waste we actually dump in landfills which can be recycled. Plus the emissions from my appliances are nothing compared to a car which I don't have, or flights to foreign places, which I don't do. Also buying local produce so cutting down on food air miles, I do what I can but I won't wear dirty clothes or force my children to.

I have to admit I didn't expect such a strong reply, and I didn't expect my comment to cause such upset - so sorry if it did. However on the other hand I think some could find comments like 'gross' etc a wee bit offensive/upsetting too (even if you said it in relation to undies, the implication is there)

No, I wouldn't expect kids or myself to wear clothes with stains on. I didn't aim that at kids as they (milk dribbling and bed wetting etc) are generally messier than adults anyway.

I wouldn't wear knickers a second day, no, 'cause they're next to my bits :D And I'd say what you wear out in public, to work etc is a different matter to what you'd wear while asleep!

As for the comments re environment, the references to car use, flights etc seem to be assuming that I (or others commenting on environmental impact of washing machines) pollute willy-nilly. Which by the way, I don't.

Please can we keep this as a discussion and not a slanging matching of 'omg ew you don't wash your clothes every day!', because that seems to be the way it's going. I think those of us who are concerned by the environmental impact (proven fact) are allowed to voice our thoughts just as much as the 'you smell!' (unproven opinion, and almost personal insult) crowd.

lightisfading, I don't think anyone is meaning to insult each other:D Assumptions have been made by several, including yourself when you said of people "running their washing machines continuously, no doubt followed by tumble dryers" Well that is pure assumption. I wash more than some posters, and less than others. I use my tumble dryer only when necessary.

I think we have to accept that everyone has their *comfort* level as regards number of wears of clothing, bedding etc. To call not wanting to wear PJs more than one night *ridiculous* is not helpful. At a pinch I will wear a strappy nightdress a second night, but PJ bottoms, never!!! I just wouldn't feel comfortable. That doesn't make me better or worse than you, just different:D

I think it's dangerous to assume anyone's *polluting* from just one aspect of life. Some wouldn't dream of starting a car up for any journey of less than a couple of miles. Tomorrow I shall run the car for a journey of half a mile. My excuse is that over 15kg of veggies, roasting tins, saucepans etc make it impossible to carry on foot:rotfl: :rotfl:

I think we should celebrate that we're all different and that's what makes life interesting. I certainly wouldn't want you all to be clones of me, very boring:rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't have any set rules for when stuff gets washed.
Undies only get worn once, tops usually 2/3 days (until the armpits gain an odour of their own or I spill summat down the fronts!), trousers & skirts the same, towels probably get changed a couple of times a week, and bedding probably 2/3 times a month. Cycling kit gets washed after every use (sweaty shorts and all that!).

I probably do 3 wash loads a week for 2 of us, but that increases depending on how many times we go out mountain biking (each trip incurrs another wash load for all our kit).

Lightisfading.. That wasn't a strong reply.. lol.. that was me being me.. it takes more than that to offend me!.. and IMO wearing a pair of knickers 2 days is gross.. so if people are doing that.. STOP IT!! lol .. I just equate things worn on the bum whether day or night as the same. and the cars/flights etc comment was meant to put the actual impact of using a WM into perspective, as a comparison. I fully appreciate the environmental impact of ALL electrical appliances.. hence I spend half my life turning things off.. not just at home but everywhere.. I'm a nightmare for it, I drive my family mad. I also think a lot of differing personal circumstances make a difference.. also the way we were brought up, what we saw our parents doing makes a difference.. or what they didn't do in some cases.

EG.. I have 8 children.. so, of course we are stereotyped.. now that doesn't bother me if they are saying we must be nymphomaniacs.. untrue, but I like the reputation! lol.. but they also expect us to be uneducated, unintelligent, dirty, smelly and eat junk food.. not to mention that we are certainly not allowed to be employed!! The number of people who think my sons disabilities are down to the fact he is 1 of 8 is unreal!.. that aside.. it does mean I tend to go out of my way to disprove those fallacies.

I used cloth nappies for years and years to reduce landfill waste (and increase my wash pile!! lol) we recycle everything possible, use sustainable sources of everything we can.. basically, other than the harpic in the loo, I do everything I can to keep the planet alive.. let's face it, when we do too much damage the planet WILL eradicate us to protect itself and rejuvenate, I don't want that to be in my childrens lifetime!

Our common goal is the same.. we aren't enemies we are allies in the fight against planetary destruction..

((hugs)) .. I do know I come across a bit brash sometimes.. I don't mean to.. usually.. friends??

right.. off to pub.. anyone coming??
