You are going on as if MSE is the only place that these deals can be found. There are hundreds of sites doing exactly the same. These Boots deals have hardly been hidden from public view and only MSE Forum users filled in. All you had to do was walk into a Boots store with an electrical department and you would see it all for yourself.

Burbs, you know that ain't true ! You simply would not see any of this for yourself.

An extremely common feature of virtually every Grabbit thread is that the deals are "hidden" and cannot simply be "seen for yourself". Often it is a case of MSE ers sharing information about which coloured boxes to look for, what the price marked is, but what they will actually scan at. Indeed the deals have been "hidden" and that is the beauty of the MSE forums in uncovering and explaining how to locate them.

I'd say there are about 3/5 similar forums. Not hundreds.

There are so very strong views here, some of them factually incorrect.

Stores have sales to get rid of stock. They want the space, they perhaps want to move onwards. New season perhaps. This stock is usually sold AT A LOSS. Boots are NOT making money from this stock - you don't honestly think that they can buy this is in at £33?

Game.co.uk often sell things dirt cheap, sometimes for a 1p. They aren't making money on this. Game sell off stock as a leader to other purchases. If there is a bargain there, maybe customers will come back into the stores in the future and see what else is there. This is true - I used to work for GAME!

Moving on ... "Personally I think people should only be allowed to join MSE forums after taking a means test to prove that they REALLY ARE poor and that they DESERVE the bargains more than the people who got to the shops before them."

Was this just a post to stir up trouble? What counts as really poor? There are people on here with earnings and incomes of 50k plus - people who would be perceived to be quite wealthy. However, they are on the debt free board asking for help and support from fellow MSE members because not only do they earn 50k per year - but they are even more than that in debt! MSE.com is for everyone - eBay traders and all. If you don't like that then ...

The information is there for anyone to grab a bargain, so if you want it - make the effort to go and get the item. Like it has been said, don't moan a week later when the people who wanted to these went and got them as soon as the headsup was given. It was actually such a good headsup, that I have nominated it for my Post of the Month, and if you benefitted maybe you might consider doing that.

Moving on ... All these "nasty" eBayers. Taking products from the poor so that they can sell to the rich. Have you ever considered they may be the "poor". The people who are skint and need an extra buck by buying items listed on here and putting them on eBay so they can pay off an extra bit of debt?

I went to my store and bought 5. 2 Micros and 3 GB Sp's. If you saw me in store, you probably would have started a fight with me the way this discussion is going. But none of them have hit the eBay shop floor. Whilst they were there, I wanted to buy them all because I knew that my friends and family and work collegues etc could benefit from this amazing bargain. So I have sold them - at cost price - so that lots of other people could benefit. Do you look upon this badly too?

My thanks go to the original post, and if people have such a gripe about this kind of thing then I don't think MSE is the place for you ...

I did notice an EggBox for £74.99 but didn't want it coz I can't see that it's much of a bargain with the 360 out there and the PS3 on the horizon.

    *sigh*

Isn't it funny how there are always people who want to blame someone/anyone when they don't get what they wanted?

I posted about this deal on Friday of last week. It's now Thursday....there was *very* limited stock to start with - boots are obviously clearing out the *last* of a deleted line. They would have sold as many as they possibly could at the full price long after they stopped buying in from their suppliers. Finally, remember that Boots are a chemist that dabbles in other stuff in their biggest stores only. They never would have had masses of stock in any one store - I'd guess at less than 3 in stock at any branch at any time - even Christmas. Remember that they are competing with the likes of Game, HMV, & Dixons which all sit on the same high street - where would you look for a PS2? Boots or Game?

Frankly I'm surprised so many people here got deals!

As for eBayers buying up 20 PS2's or whatever, I don't believe it is possible to do so even if they managed to visit 20 of the biggest Boots stores on the first day. Always remember that it's not only sole traders on eBay, some of the largest companies sell there - HP, Canon, etc. It *is* possible that a Boots employee at the central warehouse noticed this deal and bought up all the stock but it's more likely to be a larger trader clearing out their storage space in the wake of the change of console generation.

Either way, I seriously doubt these forums were abused in this case.

Anyone who has sold on eBay in the past couple of years will tell you that in general the prices there are quite a lot lower than anywhere else - to make a profit any eBayer has to work damn hard. It's not a job for the lazy.

MSE is fantastic. It even tells you the reality of the situation when hunting these bargains. This board is called "Quick, grab it while you can". It's good advice.

And for those disappointed the best advice I can offer is to say that it's the luck of the draw. You may go shopping tomorrow, pop into a Boots you were sure had none left and see just what you wanted sitting on the shelf. Or you may not. But then that can be said about pretty much any item that's in demand.

Funny enough actually I've had my PS2 for a week and I still haven't found time to actually play it!

Its nice to read highguyuks points - not all ebayers and amazon sellers are greedy and cheats! I wouldn't sell electrical goods but with other items I might buy a few things to resell if they're cheap enough.

    however like many:
I would never clear the shelves as its not fair

I am registered self employed and so will pay my dues ( if I ever earn enough!) and it's bloody hard work!

I have 4 kids and a partner who works long hours for not a great salary so this is my best work option and at times seems hardly worth it - I can spend 10-15 hours a week working and only made £800 in 6 months but I'm proud to be doing something to help my family.
  • Could we please just get back on track in regards to the original subject matter (Boots Massive Clearance), and not just use this thread as a rant about how fortuitous people are.

If you are buying to sell (good luck to you) but dont come on to this thread and gloat, keep quiet about it and then everyone is happy. That would appear to be the wise think to do.
(By the way, Im not talking about you pinkpie).

So..................any other Boots bargains out there ????;)
Some days you're the bird......and some days you're the statue

This is WAAAAYYYYY off topic, but on the above notes about big stores earning/losing, I might add.

The big chain stores make money on things like

-getting rid of a certain type of product to be first in with shelf space for a new type of more profitable product

-moving money around various bank accounts, self own companies, and in different countries, to dodge/avoid tax (apparently Rupert Murdoch's soaraway Sun have not paid tax for many years !)

-selling their stores to a holding company they set up, or a property company, putting the cash in the bank, then using the interest to rent them back (BBC always up to this)

-clever lawyers/accountants spotting loopholes in the law to exploit (do you know that the British Guiness factory kept cows on their land so they could exploit a tax loophole about farming)

which makes me laugh when uppity sales staff get angry when you find a cracking "Grabbit" bargain and try to con you out of it, saying that the store are "losing money" on the deal ... "that can't be right", "its a mistake"

Hardly "fortuitous", more likely against the ethos of the MSE forums, damaging the credibility of the information on the MSE forums, making people less likely to share information and help others, and making the MSE forums a less useful and helpful place to be part of ...
So..................any other Boots bargains out there ????;)

    So back on track.

Yes, I know where some ipod accessories are (official armband, official docking station, generic cases, holders and other accessories)

(.... but do you actually want one or do you want to flog it at a profit on ebay so denying an MSEer the opportunity to get a bargain :rotfl: )
  • How is someones want for a cheap console more important than someone who is having to ebay to help support his family and put food on the table and using a cheap deal a way to help?

A bit of fun for you could make the difference between no frills and a nice meal.

Who are you to judge to make the ebayers these "bad evil people"? Just because you want a bit of fun on an almost dead console?
