I see your point Muntz but in fairness the OPs child took a high end phone to school. The chances are whoever took the phone knew that the person had an iphone and stole it because of what it is. If the phone was a bog standard £5 payg phone then the chances are the phone would not have been taken. I guess it would be useful to know if other phones taken in the robbery from other childrens bags as that would settle the argument.
I wonder if op could update us to see what the school has done/if the police are aware/have taken action

You are probably right. But other things get stolen from schools as well. My daughter had her brand new PE top stolen and has had pens stolen. There will always be thefts from schools thats one of the reasons they say not to bring phones, ipods in etc. the relevant thing here is what if anything has been done by the school as they know who took it.

giving a child an iphone is ridiculous letting her take it to school is even more stupid

    Interesting thread this one !

Reading some of the views from people is also interesting so to add my two pence worth....

What sort of school is it that teaches kids to leave their belongings outside unattended regardless of what value they have ????

What sort of school is it that knows who stole it and doesn't do anything about it ????

iphones are just the latest in a long list of expensive bits of kit that kids have been taking to school for donkey's ages weve had designer trainers, ipods, mp3's, designer clothes, sports kit etc etc

What difference does it make what item was taken theft is theft be it £5 worth or £500 worth !

It makes me wonder what the theif's next move is perhaps a bit of breaking and entering on the way home from school after the confidence he's been given by the school ???

School policy is they arent meant to have devices or items of value in school, so the teacher should not worry about it. if a child has brought something in they should have notified the teacher.

    Hi DC,
Theres lots of things kids aren't supposed to take into school but they do !

In my day it was cigarettes, transister radio's etc and if you were caught with them they would be confiscated from you untill the end of term, that was the risk you took.
There was no such risk as a thief stealing them from you and the school blaming "you" for having them in your possesion.

I remember when I was 13 ish a kid had his football boots stolen and we were all kept in after school till about 6pm till the thief confessed.
When he did he was suspended for 2 weeks and had to write an apology to all the other kids parents for keeping them after school.

For the school to try to pass the blame onto the victim is staggering as is this idea of dumping your belongings outside unattended !

But I am guessing that the football boots were something which were meant to be in the school to start with. If so, that is a huge difference and I think you might be missing the point.

My son's school has the policy that mobile phones can be brought into school but will be confiscated if seen to be used during lessons.

However, a couple of weeks ago when I called the school office to ask them to pass an urgent message to my son I was told I should call him direct on his mobile as they didn't have time to be running around passing on messages!!

My son had a letter home from school last week re-iterating the school policy that mobiles and ipods were not to be taken into school as there were instances of people flouting the rules and then them being stolen. As parents we had to sign the reply slip to say that we realised this was the case and had discussed it with our children.

In order to combat the fact that they may miss the bus etc, there are receptionists on duty until 5.30pm and they operate a runner system during the day so you CAN get a message to your child or they can ring you at any time.

Interestingly my son wont take his phone because the teachers are clever and enable blue tooth on the laptops so they can see who has their phone with them (if they are switched on) and will confiscate them. It is then the parents who have to reclaim them from the school safe not the children.........
