daughter's iphone stolen at school

My daughter has a school blazer that has a pocket inside and thats where she keeps her phone The only time she takes it off is for PE and then the changing rooms are locked. We have told her that if she takes her phone to school it is her responsibilty and we will not replace it if anything happens to it.The school rules state that they bear no responsibility for items such as this which I fully understand. However, if the school know who took it that is a different matter and I would insist the school take action. If they are not helpful I would involve the police. If the child who stole it gets away with it they will do it to other children and may encourage others to do the same and not just with phones.0

this will give her free SKYPE to SKYPE calls, will keep her connected while you sort things out. Since a phone is obviously a necessity for her you'll have to go into town today and get her a replacement without delay this one is reasonable and cheap, if you get one for yourself you can have free calls between both of you for life.
Keep at the school and go to the police - OK you now realise it would make more sense for her to keep the vaulable phone at home and use a cheap PAYG for emergencies, that's been done ad naseum. However, even if it was a £5 phone being stolen the fact is it was stolen.
If I had an old banger stolen from outside my home it would matter just as much as if someone stole an Aston Martin from me - the point is someone STOLE it, and that needs to be recognised here and the fact it was an i-phone put to one side.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

The fact it was an iphone was probably WHY it was stolen. A cheapy from anywhere else wouldn't have been a target.
As the school appear to know who stole the phone I am confident they will pass that information on to the police. I'd be very interested to hear an update on this.
I still maintain that an iPhone is NOT a needed in school.0 -

I am sure there are lots of things that are taken to school that are not needed, however that is not the issue. The theft of a phone and subsequent actions are.0 -
I think whether it was an iPhone or not is a valid discussion but theft is still theft, regardless of what was taken. When I was in college, a similar thing happened to me, we did not have lockers and we had to do a dance exam in the theatre. We were made to leave all bags in the changing rooms which we told would be attended. The staff member who should have been attending the changing room did not and my phone and purse were stolen out of my bag. The phone was just a cheapy but it had pictures and videos of my now late granddad on it and I had no way of transport as they had taken my bus pass which was in my purse. Thank goodness I had my dads number memorised because I lived ten miles away from my college. Afterwards I found out the person who took it did it because she just didn't like me.
Just because a phone is a cheap phone does not mean it is not susceptible to theft. I think it's pretty poor that the school will not take action on this, they must know that kids are going to be taking mobiles to school, banned or otherwise and to put safeguards in place to ensure they do not get stolen and do not disrupt school life. Ie lockers. As another person posted, what would have happened if the OPs daughter had had her entire bag stolen? Or purse? How stupid must that staff member must have been. Good grief.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0 -
Im 17 and thought I'd pop my thoughts into this.
A few years ago my school had a policy of no mobile phones but they decided to wise up and realised most people needed a phone. They changed their policy to say that phones were allowed in school and on person but if caught out in class it would be took from them.
To say that phones arent needed in todays world is quite silly and things can change in all the time in school. I also cannot see how bring a phone into school is setting your kids a bad example, she isn't going to start breaking every other school rule!
A school girl having an iphone isn't necessary and should instead have a cheap £10 PAYG phone? Does anybody actually need an iphone or an expensive phone?
Er, I have been young once, and let me tell you, having a phone on you at all times is a luxury. We need things like food, warmth, a roof over our heads. People are becoming increasingly deluded in some ways and cannot distinguish the difference between NEED and WANT.
When I was in school, we had a landline in the hallway (free) and we used that to call our parents. If our parents needed to contact us, they went through the school secretary, who then in turn would pass a message onto us through the teacher taking our lesson. That is just the way things were. I am not suggesting we don't move with the times, but I think sometimes we become so dependant on little things, we forget how to function without things like phones. In reality, how many times do people call their folks throughout the day whilst they are in school?!?! I bet they call their mates more.
I don't believe it is absolutely necessary for school kids to possess a mobile phone. It is ultimately a luxury item (like many other things we have) and now it is getting to the stage where we are trying to argue why NOT having one is a bad idea.:mad: Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Skintdragon I so agree. I say this to my children all the time but it seems that is how society has become. As I have got older I have wanted less.I think the more bigger and better things you have the more complicated life becomes.0

Yes, theft, irrespective of what was stolen, is theft.
That said, the OP's daughter had her iphone stolen out of her bag. So, had that phone not been in her bag, would she have fallen victim of theft in the first place?
I think the fact that she had some gadget of high value had alot to do with the theft.
If the school stated that they will not tolerate pupils bringing gadgets to school, and they do anyway, then really, I wouldn't expect the school to cough up for the loss.
Having said this, I DO expect the school to discipline the culprit for theft. Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

I have been reading through this most of the morning now,
And i cant seem to find anywhere the age of the OP's child anywhere. Could we be enlightened.
they way some people are posting it as though the child in questions is 5, everyone assumes that this is a young child.
When I was in primary school, we moved to a new town, rather than uproot me my parents allowed me to complete my final year of school via bus. at first they gave me a pager so they could contact me I would show the teacher and they would contact my parents for me. After a while I kept missing buses, my parents taught me how to dial 0800 reverse on the public pay phone but i was given my first mobile phone for Christmas. My teachers we're informed of this and I was required to leave my phone with the teacher or at the reception desk in a safe so as not to disrupt other children.
At secondary school everyone had a phone and I can honestly say it did not matter who had the better phone, if it could be stolen it was generally attempted.
I don't think it matters what type of phone was stolen if the OP had just said my daughters phone was stolen and not specified a type of phone I guarantee you wouldn't be giving them as much grief as some of you have been.0
