my daughter had her phone stolen from her bag at school today. she needs to take it because we need her to be flexible with picking up our other kids. she had to leave the bag unattended because the teacher ordered them to leave the bags outside the classroom

we are covered by an insurance policy but it has the following clause in it

"Theft or loss of the
phone and accessories where they have been left negligently or deliberately in a public place or place to which other people have access"
what's the verdict - can i claim from the policy or am I scr€wed. the school will vigorously deny liability and i am not sure i want to start that - although its always a last resort I suppose
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

What's the school's policy on pupils having expensive electronic devices in school? Had she no pocket to put it in? I think the insurance will say it's not covered as she had left it in a place where other people had access to it.

I would ask the school to investigate at least, my DD had things stolen from her bag because she didn't have a locker, it was only pens but she was devastated, it was her first brush wth people who don't behave like we do, albeit it was 10 years ago. Surely if they have to leave bags unattended they should be able to have them loced away?

iphone that is worth about £350 to £500?

Curious, if you left that much cash in a wallet in your childs bag, would you not consider it a little foolish?

A cheap £5 PAYG mobile would have suffice?

the school policy says no devices. the reality is every single pupil has one and the school knows that.

why she didn't put it into her pocket - her school uniform doesn't have any!!, also it was an not a usual request so may have felt awkward taking it out of her bag

I agree an iPhone is not a good idea for school but the OP wasn't asking our advice about his daughter's choice of phone was he?

how is what I said abuse? I'm comparing a £500 iphone to leaving £500 cash in a bag, you just wouldn't do it? maybe it's just my common sense

Not being abusive but why are you encouraging your daughter to go against school policy, even if this were a cheap phone?

DS was one of the last kids at school to get an iphone.

Never leaves his pocket. When he plays sports it stays at home.

If I or others chose to give our children things that are expensive so be it.

To the OP, I do not believe that it was left deliberately in a public place as described
