What is the filename you have downloaded, which download link did you use, and what is the size of the file. How much ram is installed in your machine?

    Cleanmem_v2.0.1_setup

I clicked on the link in Post 1 which took me to Major Geeks and I tried to 2 top links on there.

    The file size is 2130KB.

    I have 4GB of RAM.

Edit - I used Mirror 1 as your post suggests, but have just seen the direct download which doesn't say Mirror 1. Does Post 1 need amended?

Forget about it, you have plenty of memory already, it's not needed on your system.

They've changed the website, so I have taken out "mirror 1" to avoid confusion, though any link should work. The direct download is preferable because it avoids the problem of people accidentally installing rogue applications which sometimes come up as adverts on majorgeeks etc.

Could not start application comes up when you run the setup, or after you have installed it? If the latter did you select the correct version for your os, 64 bit or 32 bit?

    Are other programs working ok?

I have gone to C>Windows>Tasks and "clean system memory task" is not listed.

Just bumping this to the front page.

I also have a netbook running Windows 7 with MSE installed as it was thought highly of on this forum. Is that still the case or should I uninstall it and install Avast instead? I have just checked and Defender isn't running on it.

mse comes with defender built in. avast is lighter/faster/better at updates, but it's upto you.

That's what I thought. However when I click on Defender in the Control Panel it says it is turned off. When I click on the Windows Firewall that is turned on.

I can't see anywhere in MSE where I could opt to turn part of it on or off.

Q: How is MSE different from Windows Defender?
A: Windows Defender detects and removes spyware only. MSE is designed to protect against the full breadth of malicious software, and specifically also prevents viruses, rootkits, worms, trojans, and other malicious software from infecting your machine. MSE is a super set of Windows Defender.

Q: Is MSE designed to replace Windows Defender and the Windows firewall?
A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. MSE will disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection. You need not disable Windows Defender manually.

MSE does not include a firewall. But it will work in tandem with your Windows firewall to protect your PC.

    Thanks for the explanation.

I have been using Avast on my other machines for years, long before I found this topic, and have been happy with it so have decided to install it on the netbook as well.
