Just spent thirty minutes following these instructions to the letter.... and then another thirty minutes restoring my PC after it failed to boot after this "advice". Really deplorable that this thread has not been closed as it is pernicious rubbish. Does MSE no credit at all.

Bit harsh, especially when the advice given is the basic stuff most competent users will do on their systems anyway, and touching on more advanced stuff like tweaking services.

There is little chance of error, except perhaps in the removal of antivirus software as well as malware removal. It's difficult to have a perfect uninstall of antivirus programs, even using the proper removal tools. Always best to use Appremover afterwards at least to remove any remnants. Similarly, removing malware on your system can occasionally cause a system to be unbootable depending on what was infected.

Maybe you are genuinely upset after having something go wrong, but the advice in this thread is just that... advice. A better approach would be to work out what went wrong, as there are plenty of people willing to help out and determine what is wrong with your system.

    LOL.

I don't know if people watched Smurfs growing up in this country, but he kind of reminds me of the angry Smurf that in response to being asked about brownies would alway say "I hate brownies", etc.

I intend to have a go at this thread later this week (when I can print out the instructions and find out the full URLs in case I need to retype them at any point!).

    1. Just to prepare for it, should I back up first? If so, what's the best way to do that? I currently have Norton 360 but part of the list of things to do includes uninstalling this.

    2. I also have Windows Defender. I am right that I don't need to disable or uninstall either this or Norton until the relevant step in the list? The previous steps will work OK without clashing?

    3. Is there anything else I should do before starting out? I run Vista on IE7 (never liked the sound of IE8)?

    Many thanks.

Not much difference between IE7 and 8, start a new thread with a hijackthis log and ram details for some specific advice.

Everything in this thread is pretty safe, but always good to have a backup anyway

You can disable defender at an point, the order isn't too important, unless you know you have an infection

Save the instructions to a file and download everything you need at the beginning, then no need for printing, or just work through them while online.

    Hi.
My laptop was slow, so I followed all the steps highlighted here, upto step 7, which was:
    7. Reset internet explorer to defaults under IE, tools, internet options, advanced. Also, under tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging.

Then I restarted internet explorer, and it says: "Internet explorer cannot display webpage."
I click more information, and this appears.

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
    • Internet connectivity has been lost.
    • The website is temporarily unavailable.
    • The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
    • The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
    • There might be a typing error in the address.
    • If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.
    For offline users
You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
    To view subscribed feeds
    1. Click the Favorites Center button favcenter.png, click Feeds, and then click the feed you want to view.
To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)
    1. Click Tools tools.png, and then click Work Offline.
    2. Click the Favorites Center button favcenter.png, click History, and then click the page you want to view.
My actual internet connection is fine, as I am now posting this from firefox.
    Can anyone help please?
