uninstall mcafee, avg, and registry optimizer, install avast 5 free, disable seaport service using services.msc then follow the rest of the guide to reduce your commit charge

C:\windows\msauc.exe looks bad, upload it here http://www.virustotal.com/ to check or scan with kaspersky, malwarebytes etc

It could be better to put that info in a new thread, named something unique to distinguish it from your other thread.

Closed - just a note on this thread, too, to thank you for all your help re speeding up my old computer. Your guide was so easy to follow that even I managed it! It has sped up the pc a bit, and although I'd still describe it as slow (compared to friends' machines etc), it's now a perfectly good 2nd machine. Thanks!

mumstheword, please post a fresh hijackthis log in your other thread, your pc shouldn't be slow

ttbg, try scanning with kaspersky. If you see the msauc process in task manager, kill it first (end task).

If that doesn't work, try a boot disc (which may also be useful for your rootkit problem)

    http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

you will have to burn the iso with something like

    http://www.imgburn.com/

using the burn image to disc option, otherwise the cd won't be bootable

when booting from cd, make sure the machine is connected to a router with a cable, so it can update virus definitions

I am trying to download CleanMem and keep getting the message, "Could not start application".

I have tried saving it to my pc and running it from Major Geeks, but keep getting the same thing.
