On Radio5 they've just said GB is going back to Rochdale to apologise in person (could be cringe-worthy). Hopefully the woman is out. :p

    How is she a bigot?

She went on general moan about all the ills she perceives in health, education, benefits, the provision of local services, etc, then towards the end threw in Eastern Europeans migrants as a cause "but you can't say anything" (you just did, love.)

She's quite obviously ignorant of the economic case in favour of allowing migrant workers, the fact that they have actually contributed to the UK economy, increasing the tax take and allowing more cash for the provision of services (failures in the local distribution of resources notwithstanding). Or the fact that it was an obligation arising from EU membership that we could not avoid after 2011 anyway, other than by withdrawing from the EU with serious economic fallout.

Basically her level of understanding of the issues that concern her is inadequate, so she falls back on blaming the foreigners. Yes, this is bigotry, of the casual variety that is all too common in some parts of this country.

Bigoted woman to Brown: ""You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're … but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?"

Yes I know it's popular to blame 'those eastern Europeans' when economic times are bad. :(

Brown should have been more careful, but she's a bigot alright.
  • See, i would have had a tiny bit more respect for GB if he refused to apolgise. If he said, no, i called her a bigot and SHE IS a bigot and therefore I will not apologise, he would have looked stronger.

    why didn't he do this?

The problem is that she is representative of a large part of the electorate all the parties have to court.

Mandelson is stepping up his plans for an exit strategy no doubt...

He said he would prepared to join a Tory government not long ago...I suspect he's on the phone to Nick Clegg as we speak.
