Hello peeps, hope you are all having a lovely bank hol weekend:D
Cool and overcast in Nth Lan today much clearer this evening so making sure the fleece is in situ.
I have been feasting of pea shoots, that's my second cut of them so I think after the third or fourth I will just let them grow and see what happens.
I have my toms and peppers outside but they are living in a neat wee tent made of cuttings from my bamboo and double layered fleece. It seems to be doing the trick protecting the plants from wind and cold so here's hoping.
I am three quarters of the way through digging over next doors soon to be flower borders. OMG between digging over the heavy clay soil and sorting out the clods of grass I am bliddy knackered. Still it will be worth it if only to see her old lady face when she realises she can at last go ahead and plant up her wee garden.
Hope the Scottish weather is warming up soon.

You've been busy again. Such a nice thing you're doing.Oh and I agree, a big garden and near the sea would be bliss!
I started off in the greenhouse earlier, fuschias are in the middle of being potted on and I've repotted the broad beans (they were trying to make a break for it htrough the bottom of the pot!). Had to go out half way through doing everything and now I'm not feeling well and am in bed with a temp. Not amused! Oh well, I'll do a bit more reading while I'm here.

Hi all. Just found this thread and looking for all the help I can get.:). Live in Dumfries & Galloway. Beautiful day here (so far). I live at the top of a hill so very windy, have had cabbage blown out of the ground a few weeks ago so they`re now cuddled under some fleece! Hopefully better luck this time round. Have a fair size garden in the country. Got fruit trees (will need help please), rasps and strawberries. Planted tatties (they`re peaking through. And peas (if the sparrows let me have any!) Greenhouse needs glass replaced as some got blown out, but have red and yellow tomatoes in it. Also got a grape vine which is taking over. As you can tell am new to veggy growing. Last house I was in had heathers and rockery plants, so pretty easy. Am hoping next year to get a few chickens but that may just be a dream. Hope you are all prepared for lots of questions:rotfl:SPC # 330

..sorry folks..missing presumed having a good time.
Watering potatoes ..well MS (garden guru) says unless drought is extreme they should be ok without.Leaves may look a bit wilted at end of hot day, if they haven't recovered by morning they need water.
On cold nights here I use cardboard reclaimed from recycling bins to line walls of my Wilko plastic greenhouses with garden canes diagonally tucked into frame to hold in place. You can use newspaper but that is a real pain 'cos takes ages to get in place...Shed is now full of cardboard which I have lettered position on so it only takes about 5 mins to do.
Put a thermometer in back garden one the other night when there was cold wind and temp was dropping rapidly without the insulation layer. Plants will survive unless extreme but our growing season is so short..every little helps.
Excess lettuce makes great soup...
must go .. half hundredweight of rhubarb we were given on Saturday awaits my attention..... :wave:0 -
I use lettuce for soup as well. I'm trying to grow Kale. Its horrible stuff but if you snip it thin with scissors then fry in butter its bearable, plus it goes in soup. Is very full of vitC apparently, and iron. Plus in the old days this was "the" Scots veg, so tough tha it will grow anywhere. Mine took ages to come on but its starting to get bigger now

We have just finished our kale planted from last Autumn, and we thought it was lovely stuff, all tender and frilly, and absolutely delicious with Sunday lunch as it got all coated in gravy!
I have started off another batch, as it is really handy in a raised bed because you can pick the leaves as you need them0 -
So I can start more seeds off now then ? Can you just plant it all year ?0

Help needed. I have just been offered some varigated privet and I wondered when is the best time to uplift it and then plant it out?
ThanksThen God looked over all he had made, and said, "I can see idiots from my house".

I have not done any gardening today and have just had a lovely barbecue. If the weather does as the forecast says tomorrow will be very rainy so I will be potting up my jalapino plants."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0 -

Thanks
It's really best done in the spring or Autumn, but I have moved a green privet in June before and it was fine. I made sure the digging up and replanting was all done on the same day and if memory serves me right it was an overcast day so the roots were not exposed to too much direct sunlight. If you do it now don't forget to water them in really really well."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0
