Hi! I am in the Falkirk area and am very new to gardening but i am absolutely addicted!! Everyone is fed up hearing about my plants etc and just as some women are crazy about shoes i am crazy about bargain gardening. Am a little worried about the weather at the moment. My success story (so far) are my peas and they are attached to one of those bamboo wigwam supports and their is no way to cover them.
I also planted pumpkins from seeds and these were ready to plant into the soil. I can kick myself because they need a meter squared per plant and i have such a small area but there is no way i can throw them away they are like one off my children :rotfl: .
I am also dealing with a horrible aphid infestation on a small cherry tree i aquired off of Freecycle and i really want to do this all naturally but this tree is in a really bad way (all the leaves are curled and covered!)
I also have peppers (capsicum) that have been in my greenhouse doing nothing - almost as if they have stopped growing (they are only around 2") but they still look healthy. Was gonig to plant them into soil today but i think i will wait. I read somewhere that they can focus on root growth at this stage and then all off a sudden shoot up. I hope that is what happens.
Lovely to "meet" you and read all off your stories! Happy growing!0 -

Hi guys, hope everyone is well...its certainely a bit chilly here in North Lanarkshire today
...I have another problem too,the pesky birds have eaten almost all my new Dig in salad seedlings,I only sowed them during that hot spell but they had sprouted into tiny 2 leafed seedlings and around 2 thirds have gone(thought it was mice, but birdies left some "evidence"....same fate has met my spinach seedlings(tho at least i have more seeds I can sow again)I didnt even see the spinach seedlings so maybe its just the seeds theyve eaten, but the troughs i planted them in look all "dug up",and same white "evidence" is there.
Went out to my plastic growhouse and the flowers on my cucumbers look kinda withered...and the flowers on my indoor tumbling toms and outdoor strawberries are not looking so great either....any ideas folks?
Still.my potatoes, carrots, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage all appear to be thriving.....Ive got lots and lots of greenery, lets just hope it produces some fruit n veg at some point.:)Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Did you put sticks in the ground and tie string criss crossed over them ? that stops them.0

It's funny how birds seem to only target certain gardens. Mine never gets touched by the little blighters, and I have been blessed to date with very little insect pests.
Tell you what i have noticed over the last few weeks while digging, were the amount of leatherjackets in the soil. I thought they primarlily were in grass?
I pick them out and feed to the hens, they go mental!!!!0 -

Is this in relation to my salad and spinach seeds?...if so then no i didnt,i just sowed them in plastic troughs and sat them out in the sun...should i maybe cover them with some netting?..in fact i have fleece, that will work too wont it?Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Pigeons will pull up or peck and strip cabbage, kale and broccoli too.. so as mardatha says protect with string or net...or fleece. Lots of cabbage whites around here but all our brassicas are in a net cage now..having removed fleece cloches. Made mistake of not netting last year
Cold in South Lanarkshire today but still dry..and plants could do with some rain.0 -
Thanks guys,I have some "pea and bean" netting from Homebargains,il lay that over everything today...might add the fleece on top cos its getting colder,I agree some nice fresh rain would make my lettuce happy...im holding back watering for a wee while yet to see if the rain does come.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
