Thanks for that - the bit I want to put buddleia in is sort of sheltered behind a shed if the wind comes from the west, as it usually does. So when (if lol!) I get some money I will buy one and try it.
I cant grow tall flowers like hollyhocks and delphinium here, they got wrecked before they flower. Lupins in one corner did ok for a few years then vanished.
And a bit of my lavender which I thought was dead, has suddenly turned green and come back to life. Most of it is dead but this one wee bit has cheered me/ The Rosemary is def gone though. All I have in flower is bluebells and forget-me-not, the garden is a sea of blue0 -
Blue is my favourite colour in flowers, so your bluebells and forget me nots sound heavenly
I got my buddleia from ebay, they are only baby plants but arrived in fantastic condition (literally a day or two after ordering) and very well packed..I think I was £3.25 each for them (got a blue, white and red one) and just a few pounds for postage.
They grow very fast so it seemed a economical way to do it.M.A.C.A.W member number 39

Hello peeps had a wee listen to Gardeners question time today as it was from Scotland . A couple of people had asked and emailed in to ask about the winter damage on ceanothus, so it seems like I am not alone in l the curse of winter freezing on this shrub.
It was pretty warm in Nth Lan again today, a wee breeze and the occasional cloud taking the edge off it being too warm.
I cut some off the pea shoots today and OMG they taste great, I wasn't sure if it was just one of those daft ideas that TV chefs like to tell you to use but really don't make much of a difference, but I was wrong. I just bought a big bag of dried marrowfat peas, soaked some overnight and planted them in trays of potting compost, needless to say I lost the ones I sat on yesterday but the rest are thriving.
Hope you all had a nice Sunday gardening.

Haven't been on here for days- busy earthing up tatties, planting herbs into corners of raised beds, hoeing weeds, planting neeps..and defending patch from neighbouring buy out..
Tatties have grown so much decided no more earthing - they are mostly earlies.Fingers crossed they don't get another frosty night.I do have fleece I can chuck over them.
Another of my lavenders has green tips today:j ..just spotted them as I started to pull it out .Got 3 new ones in Homebase on Saturday..good size plants and 3 for £5.99 and used nectar points to purchase . Homebase have 4 varieties of mint all labelled Garden Mint..I told them but don't think they'll do anything about it.So if you are buying have a good sniff. Local Homebase had peppermint, spearmint, bergamot mint?( smells citrussy) and applemint.
I think the buddleia tree in sheltered corner has succumbed to frost hoping it will come to life from base. Can't prune it back yet, it has bird feeders on it and there are blackbirds nesting in the forsythia, berberis behind it.Forget me nots and cowslips look fab .:j0 -
Well folks looks like my carrots and parsnips just aint coming for some reason so gonna rake over and re-sow tonight. Just hope it is not too late. Any thoughts would be appreciated.0

My carrots only put in an appearance on Saturday..and I've still got my fingers crossed that more than 2 parsnips will germinate. Think it was probably my failure to keep the compost in container moist. Have you any space to plant more without raking over your first planting ? The first lot may well appear still.
Have a look at http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/cultivation2.html
Both carrots and parsnips are notoriously slow to germinate...and very small when they first appear0 -
Could only plant between the rows I have planted, so would all end up too close possibly if they were to all eventually come through.0
-
If you plant between rows you can pick some small and use these thinnings..tops included in salad or soup...that is if your guinea pigs don't eat them all:rotfl:0
