Unless he can prove it wasn't due to misconduct he may be sanctioned and receive no JSA for up to 6 months.

Once he does sign on a decision will be made and he may be entitled to request hardship payments which will be less than normal rates of JSA.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
  • I filled out the turn2us entitlement check, but I was asked at what date I returned to work if I hadnt worked continuosly since April 2010. My problem Is that I havent yet returned to work, and I therefore cant check my proper benefit entitlement.
  • Can someone please help as I'm a bit confused! I am a single mum hoping to get a job working 16hrs. I just checked to see what I would be able to get and I'm confused as it seems alot!

    Here are my results

    Tax credits £138.32
    Council Tax benefit £5.94
    Housing benefit £75.81
    Child benefit £20.30
    Total £240.37

(I don't know why it is underlined but it wouldn't let me change it)

Anyway, it says the total amount I would be entitled to weekly is £240.37. Would the wages I receive from working be added on top of this? If so, that means I would get almost £350 a week altogether. Surely that can't be right for working 16hrs?? Even if I just use the Tax Credit & Child Benefit figure plus my wages I would get over £250 a week. Is this right or am I missing something?? If it is right then I don't understand why so many single mothers choose to stay on benefits when they can get this much for working only 16hrs!

Hope someone can explain this better as I've probably got it wrong. It's late and I'm tired so my brain is a bit gooey..

    Thanks :)

How many children do you have? What would you be earning? What is your rent?
    Gone ... or have I?

But remember you are now responsible for the rent this is why you get housing benefit so that portion will be going out anyway and you need to make up the shortfall out of your other benefits
  • I have one child. I'm not sure what I would earning yet, I just based it on NMW to get an idea. My rent is £475pm so going by the figures I worked it out that I'd have to pay the £117 extra to top of the housing benefit to top it up, is that right? I just find it hard to believe I'd still receive housing benefit if my wages are topped up to £250ish per week. Thats £1k a month so surely that would mean I would be earning enough to pay full rent? That's where I am confused.. Please excuse me if I'm being dumb, I've never been good with figures!

    Thanks
  • Hi, just wondering if all the new changes will have been put on the 5 minute checker site yet, and are they changes for this year, or to come in for next?
While I'm here I'll ask another question, according to the 5 min checker I can claim council tax benefit, but thats going by last years money, this year I might get more, but might not, (I'm self employed), Iknow the tax credits will have to be paid back, but would the council tax benefit? I wont know till later in the year how much I've made.
    Ta muchly
