For £299 I think its a very good deal, Im going to add some extra RAM and thats it, I already have an external hard drive so I can move things there if I start to run out of space and the DVD writer is very useful too.

I dont usually use dialup as i am on broadband, but am away for a few day next week and might need it, found free-dialup.net local rate pay as you go service.
Setup the laptop with phone number user & password, when to connect ... Nothing checked phone line all ok .. took a close look at the supplied phone cable & guess what it is wired wrong
Luckily had a spare cable from the good old days tried and that worked fine !

While the Acer 2414 is a good price, the specs are not brilliant as to be expected, and while it is ok for web browsing and light work, it needs upgrading in the Ram and HD dept. if you want to run something like photoshop.(believe me I tried!) Add in any number of MP3's & Photos you may have, and that HD seems small, that's why I took mine back today (and it had 2 dead pixels) and swapped it for a Acer Aspire with Centrino 1.7ghz 2mb cache processor 1GB Ddr2 Ram, graphics accellerator & 80GB HD with a lovely Crystalbrite 15.4" screen. It cost £425 mind, but if you take into account it has 4x the Ram and double the HDD and a great screen (the 2414 looks decidedly murky next to it) then the extra £126 seems money well spent as opposed to upgrading the 2414

Do you have a link to your £425 deal, or model number, as I'd like to compare this with the £524 deal, especially as both are Acer Aspires

768mb in single channel is going to be better than 512mb in dual.

If you are bothered about dual channel (and the motherboard actually supports it), buy two 512mb sticks.

It's best to get the tel number of your local store and contact them. Some stores will hold one and phone you when they get their delivery. Guess you have to get to store quick - took us 15mins.

Local stores have them mostly reserved for people, before delivery - so Comet main/head office not much use.
