Lots more Sneaky Ways to save the pennies

  • What a fascinating way to spend a cold evening. I'd like to add my pennoth to the pot with these.

If you still have the old fashioned toilet cistern without the dual flush, pop a brick in the bottom of the cistern and it reduces the amount of water needed per flush. For all the years I had a brick in my cistern I can't remember a time when it didn't flush efficiently.

Buy a set of little bottles (or keep used small bottles and tubs) ready to decant shampoo, conditioner, creams etc to go on holiday. Saves spending out £2 or so for a small bottle of each.

If you have small, or not so small children, in the house, slightly squash the toilet roll centre so it doesn't run freely when the end is pulled. That way children don't do an andrex puppy impersonation and your loo roll lasts so much longer.

    Hope they help somebody.

Have a good Xmas all :xmassmile:xmassmile:xmassmile:snow_laug:xmassmile:xmassmile:xmassmile:santa2:
  • It took me 3 days on and off but I finally read this thread!

My tip would be to freeze meals in small Tupperware boxes, once frozen decant and place in cheap sandwich bags and write on the bag what's inside. This saves you money because you don't have to buy too many Tupperware boxes, AND you can use cheap sandwich bags and not worry about them splitting and the content spilling out. It also means you can write on them, and not worry about a label or not getting it off. Oh and the content of each bag is square so make for easy stacking :D

Garam Masala - I read on the feed 4 for £100 a month website that this is a great substitute for anything that asks for cinnimon, cloves or nutmeg, meaning you pay less and can bake more!

Ive read this one fully and Im halfway through the previous one (at page 101!) Im getting there! There are some fantastic ideas, some that Im already putting into place - such as soda crystals, stardrops, half fabric conditioner, half washing powder and half a dishwasher tablet! Due to my surgery I am not able to water milk down, but I still love all the ideas! :)
    Thank you to all! Really~!

Oh and meant to add - I advertised on a facebook selling page about stuff for charity and where I should send it - I was later contacted by a lady who gathers stuff for the local womens domestic refuge. They take all the household stuff and clothes and baby clothes, and the rest goes to cancer research shops...worth a look into if you have bits to donate :)

  • This is a tip for everyone BUT HARD WATER AREAS benefit most:
PUT A SCOOP OF WASHING SODA (about the equivalent of a heaped tablespoon) into the washer drum (does not matter what laundry detergent type you use, eg. tablets, sachets, liquid etc.)
IT HAS THE GREAT AVANTAGE OF SOFTENING THE WATER, GIVING MORE CLEANING POWER SO THAT YOU MAY USE ONLY THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF DETERGENT and IT HELPS TO KEEP LIME SCALE OFF THE WORKING PARTS OF THE WASHING MACHINE.
Also, please note: IF YOU BUY WASHING SODA IN ANY SUPERMARKET IT CAN COST AS MUCH AS £1.20 FOR A SMALL BAG-
THE SAME ONE COSTS ABOUT 59p TO 65p IN A BARGAIN SHOP!!

A couple I've picked up from various bits of reading recently:D

    1. Beat 8oz butter until it's soft then gradually add in 4tbsp hot water- this increases the bulk and the butter can be spread more thinly when cold.

    2. Never throw away orange or lemon halves before removing the zest first [it can be frozen] - do before squeezing the juice

    3. If you have an empty oven shelf fill a bun tray with small potatoes for baking- these can be frozen.

If you are going to follow the tip above about garam masala, be a bit careful to read the ingredients first. Some garam masala has many other spices other than the ones mentioned. You wouldn't want to end up with a curry-flavoured cake!!!!!!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

  • Sorry, I haven't had time to read all the thread but I have a question....if I water down washing up liquid will it separate in the bottle and give me away? I know I could put it in a non clear pump bottle which wouldn't show it but I don't have anything and I don't want to go and buy anything at the moment.

    Thanks!

  • Hair conditioner can also be if you have no shaving foam.

Hair conditioner can also be used as fabric conditioner if you have got some hair conditioner that doesn't suit your hair for example (like, if you've just dyed it).

I have also been known to use bubble bath or shower gel as washing liquid substitute, with some soda crystals as usual.
