I know several people who have spent time at her Majesty's pleasure and I have seen the impact on their families.
I don't suppose it was good for the victim and their family either!RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Why does everyone assume LL's are fatcats?
I certainly am not! I gave my tenant the benefit of the doubt and it has left me short of 2k.
I am not saying the OP was treated fairly- just pointing out that if a place to live is such an important factor in your life then you should prioritise making sure it is paid for. And that people seem to forget that LL's have bills to pay too, and without them many people would not have nice places to live and rent.
I agree, people most assuredly should pay their bills on time and on that count, the OP is entirely in the wrong, however the way that this landlord has acted after the fact is so far beyond the pale that she deserves what she gets in regards to the law and I hope she comes up before a judge that will throw the book at her (and for any pedants, no I don't hope that he flings the nearest book he has handy at her head during the court proceedings.)It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -

Sorry what has that go to do with anything? If the OP had stolen items from a shop then clearly the OP would be reposnible for that and would be prosecuted???
No one is presuming LLs are fat cats-= but this LLbroke the law wither to gain money or to cause distress or both.
It was against the law. The law is crystal clear? Have you read it? Do you not understand it as a Landlord???
As a LL im sure you are familiar with it but there are many who arnt ( we see them here every day asking the most basic of questions- its a good job they do I pity thier tenants! )
Landlords are responsible for paying thier bills- as everyone- you seem to be suggesting they are in line for special treatment?
Any money-saver will tell you if you cant pay your bills you need to cut back on expenditure or get a second job.
Ps not all LLs provide "nice places to live" Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...

Not paying rent is like stealing is the point

yes and yes- but because i know the law doesn't mean i agree with it

when did i imply this- are you saying asking rent be paid on time is special treatment?!

As a LL I also have a FT and PT job!! Again you are assuming LL's do not work for some reason?! I can pay the bills as long as the tenant pays hers!!
Ps not all LLs provide "nice places to live"
Yes but those of us that do are being pushed out by tenants and laws that are very anti landlord!! I for one will sell the property as soon as I am out of neg equity or close to it and NEVER be a LL again due to all the stress of trying to get arrears off my tenant and pay the mortgage so that she has a nice place to live!!:silenced:They Were Up In Arms wrote: »I think tabskitten is a crying, walking, sleeping, talking, living troll :cool:0 -

I really dont understand what you mean here?
Late rent or even unpaid rent is not theft. Do you know what the law is?
Surely you know that running rental properties is a business. Therefore at times, you in that business might make a loss. It is part of an occupational hazard.
personally I wouldn't run a business if I didn't like or agree the rules that governs it, why did you?
Sounds like youve been burnt ( *only in terms of a bad experience, no references to arson here btw*) is that because you are only a landlord by accident as you couldnt sell it ( sounds like it)
If you get out of NE having bided your time you may well have your tenants to thank for that keeping you away from repo - certainly other landlords do . Please dont try to make out you are providing the house for her benefits, its clear the only reason you are renting it out is because you cant sell it :rotfl: Not because you feel like being a generous benefactor! It is a shame that you have to work all the hours god sends as it sounds like you do, but that really is an occupational hazard and its why I wuold never be a Landlord.
Again, lets reiterate- ITS A BUSINESS not a game. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

... Late rent or even unpaid rent is not theft. ...
"Late" Rent being theft or not is beside the point in regards to this thread and the OP.
(I'm not having a dig at yourself, by the way, just using your post to clarify something I noticed when reading the thread!)
From Page One ...The regular payments were going on just fine (been there for 8 months) until SHE wanted the bank account I paid into changed. It is paid on the 17th of each month. Last month she called me on the 13th and asked me to come to her house after work (I was doing an on call shift and finished at 9pm) and fill in some paperwork for her. I was leaving to go on holiday on the 15th for 3 weeks. I went to her house and did as she asked at very very short notice. ...
1st point - this "Late" payment occured due to what could be said to be an un-reasonable request by the LL in relation to the existing payment setup.... My bank bounced the standing order form for security reasons (I have a letter from them to that effect) BUT this meant the original account was still paid and received fine. She contacted me by txt to ask me why I had 'cancelled' the new standing order and still paid the original account while I was on holiday. ...
2nd point - the OP is saying in this part that the original account used by the LL recieved the money. I am not sure why the OP has not made more of an issue about this.
It would appear, based on this, that the LL requested a change to the payment method with insufficient time to ensure it occured correctly, and when the change did not occur, despite having the money in another account, reacted in the way she has done.
Perhaps the OP could clarify if the rent left his account on the payment date, even if the destination account was not correct?
This would end once and for all discussion into the OP and their "morals" in relation to the payment of rent.
PS
If I was to mildly speculate, perhaps the LL has issues with her bank? Maybe they took the rent under those friendly rules that allow them to offset debts in other accounts? This could explain the LL getting peaved, as this would essentially mean that the rent was "lost" to her. Of course, I am sure there are other possibilities!0 -
Thank you, RUN, for a sensible post which possibly gives a logical solution for the LLs extremely odd behaviour."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"
Extract from "If" by Rudyard Kipling0 -
It seems that way to me R.U.N.
Why the panic to change bank accounts all last minute. It sounds like someone's gone over their overdraft and that cash would be lost in the banks abyss or something.
In any case LLs should have a few months mortgage payments sat aside for what seems like the potential for this happening. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
