I have arranged to work extra weekends for the next 3 weeks. This will pay for my legal expenses.

You may have legal cover if you have a contents insurance and took the optional extra of Legal Cover. If you had this, ask your insurers for a legal claim form to see if they will take your case. They won't pay retrospectively.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I don't suppose it was good for the victim and their family either!

When did I intimate it was? Did I seek to excuse anything that this shoddy landlord or the ex-cons I know have done? Maybe in your black and white world all criminal offences have a helpless victim and an evil mastermind, but the real world is far more complex that that.

That's twice in one thread you have put two and two together and made six. The three people I know who have been to prison were for manslaughter, a firearms offence and possession of class A/B substances :(Of course all three needed a stretch! I know the devastation it caused to two sets of parents, I believe it is affecting two of their (now teenage) boys who idolise their fathers.

Manslaughter: a twenty-something man gets into a drunken fight and somebody dies. The survivor is not aggressive at all but he is cheeky, so I suspect he 'started it'. :(

Firearms offence: a soldier breaks up with his partner and finds out she cheated. Loses the plot mentally and goes round uninvited. Nobody is physically hurt; soldier loses his liberty and his career.

Possession of Class A/B substances: No sad back story just a dealer of 'recreational substances'. No real regard for the law so no asset to society, but not the sort who would prey on youngsters or junkies.

I too have been reading this with absolute horror.

Good luck in taking forward all the various things to do be done. I really hope that things are resolved in your favour as soon as possible (both on the criminal and civil side of things), that you get recompensed for all your losses, and that the LL learns first hand that being a LL carries certain responsibilities and consequences.

Perhaps your Union could also assist with legal cover / advice?

I'm with FireFox on this one. Of course, punishment is required in the case of a crime. And, of course one has huge sympathy for the victims and their families. However, one can still have compassion for the criminal being punished. Punishment is something that is necessary, rather than something one should take a delight in.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Laptop was found in a box wrapped up. Both my external hard disks are there. No confidential information is kept in my research data (all anonomysed); as per my original ethics application all confidential data is stored in a locked room in a London university. I store no sensitive information on my laptop.

I found my girlfriend's uniform (she was very pleased!).

Around £1500 in books are missing (mostly hefty medical textbooks), £50 in kitchen utensils/pans, £150 subwoofer and around £200-300 in cufflinks. A few other small items seem to be missing (I will only be certain when I finally move in to my new place). Havent seen my cheque book (cancelled) or credit cards (cancelled). The police are aware things are missing, they are not aware of specifics yet, but they did ask me to make a list and bring it to my meeting later in the week.

I have arranged a place to live starting next Tuesday. Until then I'm sleeping on a friend's floor very close to work.

Glad you got the laptop back and sounds like you're being v organised with things. An odd mix of stuff for LL not to return (medical textbooks often have a limited audience!) but hopefully they'll return them pronto when they realises how much trouble they're in. Definitely get legal advice and pursue this.

Make sure you keep good records, too. The last thing you want is LL saying 'I changed the locks cause there was a break-in...I did try to give Touche the key but his phone was off.' :rotfl:

Why haven't you broken back in to the property? It's still yours until a legal eviction has taken place.

I wouldnt go breaking back into the property - as this MIGHT undermine the point that OP has been stoped from living there.

OP why are you saving up for legal fees, have you actually spoke to anyone- they will charge the fees at the end and the fees will most most probably be paid by her on "no win no fee". This is a cut and dried case so I wouldn't expect you would pay any fees.

Let alone the fact you are seriously financially disadvantaged by this whole palaver why should you be paying to exercise your rights.

Until you speak to a lawyer you wont know, in 3 weeks time, things will be different., you might not be bothered etc.

Do the police know that the CCs are missing?

I think we are seeing exactly the sort of person that this is.

Manslaughter: a twenty-something man gets into a drunken fight and somebody dies. The survivor is not aggressive at all but he is cheeky, so I suspect he 'started it'. :(

but someone died as a result of their behaviour the injury sustained in the fight was obviousely sufficent enough to cause death.

Firearms offence: a soldier breaks up with his partner and finds out she cheated. Loses the plot mentally and goes round uninvited. Nobody is physically hurt; soldier loses his liberty and his career.
so as a soldier he should be aware that carrying a firearm for anyother purpose than it is issued/licenced for is a statoutury offence and there is no defence so prison is the only option what was he intending to do with said firearm sounds like he intended to intimidate someone

Possession of Class A/B substances: No sad back story just a dealer of 'recreational substances'. No real regard for the law so no asset to society, but not the sort who would prey on youngsters or junkies.
a dealer of any illegal substances is wrong - just because he doesnt actively "prey " on children/junkies doesnt mean that he shouldnt be punished -
im sorry but it is like your trying to justify these peoples actions and making out the law has been unfair on these people-for a jury to convict they have to beyond reasonable doubt in all of these cases that is the case

I don't understand your comment. Fire Fox has stated in bold that 'of course all three needed a stretch' which has what they got - they were convicted.

IMO calling for a prison sentence for the LL is over the top. A hefty fine of say £5k for the victim should suffice. Prison should be reserved for those who are a danger to society we haven't enough room in our prisons as it is.
