What age is LO, What time are you putting him down to bed, does he sleep the night through once he is asleep?

Personally this is what I would do....

I would skip the bath and read the story while feeding, you could probably halve the time spent just by doing that....It sounds to me like LO is overtired/overstimulated?

Maybe on the days you are going to bath aswell start a lot earlier, there is nothing wrong with having him bathed and in his PJ's for an hour or so before he even has his last feed....Gives him time to settle down again after the excitement of bathtime.

You could try weaning him off the rocking to sleep gradually, by say rocking him almost asleep then putting him down but not picking back up again just keep rocking him while he is lying in the cot...then keep on reducing the amount of time you are rocking him in your arms and increase the rocking in the cot part. Once he is well used to this maybe try putting him down with only rocking him in the cot...and reduce the time you do it gradually so eventually you will just be able to pop him down and walk away.

Sorry if none of that is of any use to you at all, I am good at waffling on when no-one is interested:o

Thanks for all of this info! OH is 11 weeks old tomorrow and I have been doing the bedtime routine for weeks now. I hadn't thought of doing the story and feed at the same time, although I doubt I have enough hands for it all but will try. I have been putting him down anywhere from 6pm until 8pm and it generally takes up to two hours whatever time it is. At first I thought he was feeding all that time (when he had had his bath; etc!) and have now realised that he was feeding and then suckling for comfort. He is now fed and then winded and then I put him down. Tonight he screamed until I rocked him to just before he was asleep. I then put him down but with my face quite close to his and then left. Generally by 8pm he is asleep and will sleep to between 4 and 5am for a feed, although struggles to sleep very long after that.
Can I ask a stupid question again? How do you over stimulate a baby? I know that I am in his face quite a bit as I feel guilty when I leave him on his own. How long should they be left entertaining themselves for?
Sorry for asking dumb questions but I AM A NEUROTIC MOTHER!!

Ah he is still quite young then, I know it can feel frusrating and restrictive, but I would definitely take it slowly...if he was 6-9mths and you were rocking him to sleep I might say to be a bit firmer with it.

Just being shown a lot or having a lot done within a relatively short period of time can be very stimulating for young babies, they need time to just look about:) Like I say I wouldn't bother bathing every night and how about just reading a story from memory while feeding, as opposed to using a book each night, just him hearing your voice would be plenty. If you do definitely want to use a book, to get him used to nooks and letting him look at the pics maybe just get his PJ's on and do a very short book then feed directly before bed. Or you could always use the books in the daytime:)

Maybe you could try a few days of varying bedtimes ranging from the earliest you normally put him down to a bit later than the latest time he would normally go down......if you make a note of which time/routine gets the best results and take it from there.

You sound like you are doing very well anyway and he is lucky to have such a lovely mummy

    xx

Guinea - I wouldn't be too worried about setting a routine yet, he's still tiny :) He actually does really well if he sleeps for 8 hours already! Keep giving him the mummy cuddles he loves - they're not babies for long :) It will help him feel reassured that you're there and will help him feel more confident when you finally do introduce a proper routine.

As Mfd says, there are matching shoes... Caitlyn would have been sporting them today... But the strange lady at the play place took them and put them in a pouch behind the counter...

    What 2 children?
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

calcium-wise hammy, the highest non-dairy source of calcium is instant oat cereal (supermarket own brand of ready brek).

It is also the absolutest cheapest way of getting calcium into anyone's diet other than a pill, drops or eggshells :)
any suggestions for someone who can't eat oats? would another fortified cereal be a good guess? :D
