SM – glad you haven’t deserted us completely! I bet you are back to the top of the post count tree already.

I agree with Susan and Bruno – sometimes you do have to apply for lots of jobs before you get one. I worked for years waitressing and doing bar work when I was at uni as my parents had owned a cafe (where we made scrambled eggs using the coffee steamer!) so the only experience I had was in catering. I applied for loads of office based jobs when I dropped out of uni (Accountancy – who wouldn’t drop out?!), but it took me lots of applications and several interviews before someone took a chance on me. I know that I am intelligent and capable, but I can also be shy and lack confidence when it comes to job interviews, particularly if I know I don’t have the relevant experience.

I now earn a reasonable wage which I have fought very hard for, and I manage a team of 10-12 staff. My former bosses were ex cops who are used to giving commands/orders and not being questioned on anything. So despite what some people are saying about getting involved with everything, there can still be people who hold you back, and it’s not a sure fire way to a better job/promotion. I certainly go on any training courses available and my new bosses love me as they have realised how hard I work and how capable I am, but it is very demotivating in the meantime when you are working really hard and not being recognised. I could have left and looked for another job, but the benefits are good where I work, and since I had planned on a family, this was an important consideration for me. I am dreading going back because I feel stuck in a rut again and have been doing my job too long without progressing, but opportunities are scarce if I want to stay in this field.

Anyway, I still don’t know what I want to do and I am 33. But I have worked in different areas, spent a year travelling, lived with different people, enjoyed a great social life, and gained great life experience before deciding to settle down and have a family. Everyone is different, and sometimes I am jealous of my friends who have bigger houses with less of a mortgage, but I remind myself that they haven’t had the great experiences I had when travelling and seeing a bit of the world, and they are jealous of me because of that. You can only do what is right for you, and don’t compare yourself too closely to others because all circumstances are different.

MFD, Amber is anti-social at sleepy times too :D She wants her bed. Like her mummy, she gets ratty if you don't leave her alone.

Off to my bed now too, night everyone!

Kind ofTim went out in American Idol as I have just finished watching it.

Xmas – Well done to Joey for being mobile.

MFD – Well done to Benjamin for taking off his shoes.

Jam – Yes, it was me asking after NMS. I am friends with her on FB. Not sure if she is having problems with laptop and mobile phone or something so might be why she hasn’t replied to your text. Was she due to go away somewhere but hasn’t made it because of the flights? I am not sure – just trying to second guess her last post on FB!
And WM is mummy to Alex so think that’s who you are confusing with Xmas!

Krystal – Thinking of your nephew and family and keeping fingers crossed for them.

Sami – Not sure where you read that it’s not natural for a baby to sleep on his/her back. I guess if you look hard enough, you can probably find information for and against different theories. I googled “natural sleeping position baby” and came up with this link which says the most natural position is on their backs for co-sleeping. Not saying I agree that it is correct, just that there is information to support that.

SM – I think you do come across as quite negative, and that’s obviously borne out of your background, but I am glad you are working on it. I think it’s great you are doing your driving test. Even if it doesn’t immediately open up job opportunities for you, it will give you a confidence boost when you achieve it. I also respect the fact that you try hard to save for stuff rather than just run up lots of debt. I definitely have much more of an issue with people who continually plead poverty but seem to be able to afford holidays, new cars, doing up their houses, eating out all the time. But then, it’s up to individuals and I obviously don’t know the full story of people’s circumstances so try not to judge if I can.

After 2 mammoth posts, I am off to bed. Night night anyone still up. Will probably be back around 8 as it's my turn on early duty tomorrow but long lie on Sunday!! Yippee. x

    Hello,

    Shiny new thread.

Welcome, hugs, well done, congratulations all round (too many to mention but I have read everything).

Career - I did 2 weeks work experience in an admin office and loved it so left school at 16 did YTS for 2 years and have had a variety of office jobs over the years. Still not found the dream job though. However, since having Katie the job is not as important. I'm looking forward to the day my DMP finishes so I can think about going part time.

We're a tired house tonight as I had the crazy idea of DH walking to meet me at work and all walking home together! So DH, Katie and dog walked approx 6 miles, via the beer garden on the way home so it took us approx 3 hours. It was lovely so we are planning doing it a lot more throughout the summer (weather permitting of course).

ETA: must start hitting the thanks button more!

question ... ever since realising im going to be 25 this year its really got me thinking .. what am i doing with my life? (believe been on a emotional roller coast for a while now just been keeping it in) ... they always say by 25 you're ready to think about family .. well i have my family and if i never have a 3rd child id be ok with that .. but my career or lack of one has left me feeling sort of lost .. so my question is when did you decide on your careers and at what age? x

I was at uni until I was 24 but towards the end I had spotted a niche job area that was just developing - technology transfer for universities so got myself experience in that area and got my current job. I don't know if I'm totally suited to it but it's a good area to be in and I could transfer to private industry and earn loads more but I love the team I'm with at the moment and that is more important to me now than career progression.

OH didn't go to uni and did lots of tourist industry type work until we moved to London and he finally got a job with the police which he'd always wanted to do but had failed to get in back home. He was 27 then.

When we both got our jobs we sat down one day and decided what we wanted out of life so planned get a flat in the next year then kids before I turned 30 - only just missed out on that! Sometimes I'm envious of people who have kids earlier but life is what you make it and I swapped having kids early for getting a career.

Just talking to myself here! Oh well, nothing new!

I haven't found a good guide to BLT online so if anyone can direct me to one I would appreciate it. Susan, can I have the link to your website again please? I have a few questions if anyone feels like answering at a more reasonable hour.

Are there any foods you shouldn't give to start with, ie. my HV said not to give grapes as she has seen lots of babies choke on them. And what about nuts? Is there a minimum size? Erin keeps trying to get my muesli in the morning should I let her try some?

Obviously I should avoid salt and too much sugar, anything else?

Do you avoid using a spoon? Erin quite likes to chew hers on the few occasions we have given her a spoon.

We had pasta and banana tonight, I don't think I'm providing a healthy menu but does that matter at this stage?

    Thanks for any answers :)

I also made the mistake of staying in a job where I was very unhappy just because I was mid fertility treament and didn't want to be starting a new job and then having to take ML. It's like now it's great my current job is so close to home but all the skills I have are being wasted so I'm getting bored and frustrated, hence job applications.
