Don't feel pressured into it if you feel he is fine. I hate the way HV's etc get you wound up thinking things are a problem because they have a quota to fill or have just been on a recent training course about a certain problem.. they get overzealous and 'diagnose' everyone.. which means the children who do need the facilities often have to wait 3 times as long while all the unnecessary cases are dealt with first.

My grandbrat is about a month older and says maybe 4-5 words.. and they are not clear.

Does he understand when you ask him to do something.. pass his shoes for example?
If he chatters away to himself while playing he is probably fine

They develop at different rates and he may just be learning other stuff first.. like walking and kicking a ball and jumping..

Moomin did not say a word until one month before she was 3.. she had been out for the day and came home and was suddenly able to talk.. she has barely shut up since!

It would make more sense to have his hearing checked before jumping the gun and referring straight to SALT.. he may have glue ear which is more common in boys and also intermittent. All 3 of my boys and 1 of my girls had it.. though it was outgrown before they were about 8. I refused grommits too as they are thought to be useless in the majority of cases.

I would suggest leaving him until he is about 2.5 before even thinking about lack of speech being an issue.
    thanks pigpen.

I think my issue is that I don't know whether I should be worried or not, because I don't know what's normal!

She seemed to think he should have comprehension of things like 'we're going out now!' or like you said 'where are your shoes?' neither of which I think mean anything to him.

I think he understands 'can you clap?' and 'can you wave?' because he does those whenever we say it. But everything else seems a bit flukey really, like he's just guessing until he gets the response that shows he's got it right (us smiling, clapping, saying 'good boy!')

he says 'yeah' and daddy. He doesn't seem to get that daddy is DH and says it frequently for no reason she was suggesting. She said 'so he uses it of any man'. My response was 'well no, he'd be just as likely to say it to an envelope or his raisins.'

She then said, 'I expect he's just developing his gross motor skills, so will be further on with walking than his peers'. Well this is troubling too, as he can't walk, and his RL friends can, and V, seth, benjamin, Erin, Kai are all further on than him in walking by a long shot.

So in short :o I have no idea whether to be worried or not, as I have no knowledge of wjhat's normal.

I know I get frightened reading about what other children can do, but maybe all mums have that?

Poor Weezl, have a *hug*. I know I look at other babies Elenas age, and what they can/can't do - I'm sure thats normal. I'm sure he is just fine, but get him checked if you're worried about it.

Congratulations to Krystal! (and I'm a bit jealous) :o

*hugs* to all who would like or need them xx

But Weezl I think V is the oldest of the mentioned babies, and she was the last one of them to walk - they're all so different.

V walked at the very end of April, when she'll have been almost 15 months old, which I think is very late because L was only 9 months old when she did it.

ETA: I think PP has it right. Some HV's are over cautious (sp?) in case they miss something that is wrong. Our HV was very happy that V could do Mama, Dada & det-down at her one year check (she was over 1), and didn't seem to think she should be doing any more.

Will the insurance really be that much? Have you looked into it?
I put my Mum on my insurance for a week a couple of years ago, she was looking after my children, so the least I could do was to let her have my car. ;) I'm almost certain it only cost us £20-30, certainly no more than £40.

Hi Weezl We miss you. :(
I think we looked into it a year or so ago, although OH is now over 25 and I 'think' his points have all expired now too, he is still a higher insurance risk than your lovely mum tho ;) I shall tell FIL to call them up then I can stop speculating

Weezl - I would be worried but I wouldn't act on my concern IYKWIM ?? Like I worry a bit that Edgar doesn't eat much compared to his peers but I'm not actively trying to do anything about it because I know he's getting nutrition from my milk and I'm sure he'll get there in the end. I think the same of Fergie, I reckon he's just taking his time thinking about things and will one day get up walk over to you and say Drink mummy or something similar that will make you cry

I don't know what other kids can do either Weezl. I don't know if Benjamin is advanced or behind and TBH at this stage I don't much care....he is developing is all that I can tell you. He does more this week than he did last week (although that may not always be true because he seems to forget things that he used to do when he finds new tricks!!).

Benjamin has quite a few words...but some of them I don't know if anyone else would know what they are. I know cos I am his mum and he says 'wu-wu-wu' and it means 'woof-woof-woof' and this is a dog. So I class this as a word - not sure if HV would or not.

15 months is still not classed as a late walker (at least I don't think so).

I guess that because of Kester the HV sees more of Fergie. I don't think Benjamin hasn't seen a HV this year!

If it will put your mind at rest then go with the flow. But if it were me then it would be more worrying to go through the process and the stress of my baby 'performing' in front of the various professionals than it would be to just wait and see.

    ((HUGS))

EDIT - I forgot!! Our PCT doesn't do any checks between the 9 month check and the 2 year check because, to quote the HV 'development rates are so different between 9 months and 2 that we wouldn't know where to start comparing - by 2 things have settled down and we can be expecting them all to be doing similar things'

    Hi weezl :hello:
Like everyone else has said I wouldn't be too worried, they all develop at different stages so I wouldn't start to worry until much later on but that's easier said than done!
Oh and BIL was 2 before he walked! :p

We still have no teeth at 9 months! :D

I'm on training today but just had lunch of a sandwich and chips - nomnomnomnomnomnomnom!!

Speaking of BIL, did I mention he's coming back? He's under strict instructions that as soon as he gets his exam results in August then he either moves out on his own (passes exam) or moves back home (fails exam).

I'm gonna miss the spare room for 6-8 weeks
A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

Where does the time go?

I didn't think of that - your OH is only a baby whereas my Mum isn't! :rotfl:And she's never had any points, probably because she's never driven over 25mph.
If you saw my Mum driving, you'd definately not consider her to be a lower insurance risk than anyone. :o

I'm sooo bored. I'm uploading all of our cd's onto itunes after we lost them a while back when the laptop died. :(

Oooh i have a perfect excuse to wriggle out of the Brat basbysitting here... I've just had a text "hi thanks for getting Brat tomorrow really appreciate it, i can take DS on Fri if you're free?"

Well... we're not free, we have Beavers. And i don't really want to mention Beavers in case she joins him up ().

Can anyone tell me how to word it so i'm basically saying i can't do it, don't want to be tied into it every week... Without being arsey and still keeping things friendly?! Or is it not possible? :(

My friend got stopped the other day for driving too slowly - the police reckoned she must be drunk to be so slow and cautious!!! She is always like that (and has been rear-ended at roundabouts a couple of times because of it).

Beenie - would you be prepared to play the 'not coping very well' card with her? Perhaps say that you are really struggling and finding it really difficult to cope and at the moment looking after her son is just too much for you? Apologise and say that you need to look after your health for the sake of your kids (a kind of 'I am so depressed - woe is me' response).
