  • I would like to nominate 2 charities
    https://www.scottishspca.org.uk
    https://www.rspca.org.uk

Living for the day when animal cruelty stops.
I have chosen 2 as it's a popular misconception that they are one and the same when in actual fact, the RSPCA only operates in England & Wales and the Scottish SPCA operates as a completely separate charity in Scotland.
Both of these charities help rescue, treat and rehome thousands of animals large and small every year and strive to prevent cruelty by informing and educating the public. The Scottish SPCA are the only animal charity with the power to prosecute those who choose to neglect and abuse defenceless animals.
Astonishingly these 2 vital charities receive no Government or Lottery funding (unlike many of the 'people' charities already listed). Last year they rescued over 175,000 animals which would not have been possible without public support.
Thanks for considering them! They're great and so is this idea Martin!
  • Hello, I hope you might consider a donation to Orbis. They are dedicated to the elimination of avoidable blindness in the developing world, and they make miracles happen!

Of all the senses to lose, your eyesight must be about the worst, especially in a developing country that may not have the infrstructure we enjoy in the West. It may not cost a huge amount to save the eyesight of a child suffering from cataracts, for example, so every penny counts!

    Thanks for reading this

Me again. I feel such a hypocrite, giving the UK baby mortality rate (17/day) when the rate in Africa is heartbreaking, staggering, shocking. Remember the click campaign "A child dies as a result of extreme poverty every 3 seconds"? 1 death every 3 seconds is nearly 30,000 children dying every single day :(

And Live 8? That was just after I lost my baby and I cried for the millions of mothers facing this too because, whilst my daugther died after complications during birth, theirs die simply because of POVERTY.

Another thing's struck me - I'm a worried DFW with a few thousand on the credit cards, average mortgage etc. But OMG... talk about putting it into perspective, my money worries pale into insignificance when you consider that parents watch their children die simply because they don't have the means to feed them. 40 have died whilst I typed this message.

That's why I feel such a hypocrite. This site is all about us saving money and the irony isn't lost on me and I hope us working to save money will help give money to those who need it, so that's why I change my support to Make Poverty History http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/video/

  • Please may I nominate the Turner Syndrome Support Society.

    https://www.tss.org.uk

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosome abnormality that affects about 1 in 2500 live female births. The charity is small and the condition is largely unheard of but affects so many girls & women. TS is thought to account for many more miscarriages. The girls and women with TS are all infertile & short statured requiring growth hormones and many have congenital heart & kidney defects. Other symptoms include webbed neck, no onset of natural puberty, behavioural and learning difficulties. So much more research and support is needed to help these girls and women fulfil their potential. :A
  • I would like to nominate The Samaritans - I would really like to nominate my local branch, but they cannot afford a website of their own, so I have to go with the movement nationally. A desreving organisation, funded only bu public donation and generosity, but available 24/7 to anyone and everyone, by telephone, e-mail, face to face and now text.

    Thanks all
  • S.E.R.V which stands for the "Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers".

    https://www.serv.org.uk

Emergency Blood delivered by unpaid volunteers at night.

We are small charity based is SE england and deliver emergency blood products during 7pm to 6am, free of any charge, when the NHS can not afford the cover themselves. Primarily most of our members use their own vehicle and pay for fuel themselves. We have 2 dedicated bikes which we have purchased and are still trying to pay for. No NHS funding is received and we are NOT part of the National Blood service - we are a small charity.
Our charity helps everyone! unlike most other charities only helping a minority group. Wether you are young or old, male or female, rich or poor, able bodied or disabled, have cancer or not, black or white, happy or sad, healthy or ill.......you get the picture, we may one day help save your life! Wether its an accident or illness, we make sure there is cover available.
But we need funds to continue this good work.
