  • You've got to be kidding.
2.6GHz is more than enough for ANY application, except games (which would still work well if it had a good GPU).

Firewalls, Norton, IE etc use RAM, NOT CPU cycles. And to prevent this, you can stick in another 256mb from crucial for £25.

This is a bargain. You cannot even build a system like this + a cheapo 17" monitor for under £300.

You may have to watch out with the memory on these machines. Dell often deliver 256Mb as 2x128Mb taking up the only two memory slots. In this situation you can only upgrade by replacing both memory chips rather than just adding a second one.
May be worth checking which one you get once your order is confirmed.

the processor isnt that great - once you've added Norton and a Firewall for surfing it'll struggle

What? 2.6 isnt great?! lol!!!! Ive built hundreds and hundreds of pc`s and ive not experienced any problems with norton & a firewall. Indeed, i built an old PC for my parents last year. A Dell with 600mhz processor and 192mb ram with on board graphics. I stuck norton 2003 on that with the firewall and it ran like a dream.

Where you might get a problem is with norton 2004. That will slow even a 3ghz machine down to a speed similar to a 486.

My "main" machine atm is a xp2100 overclocked to about 2500mhz. Ive an aging 9500pro card overclocked to similar to a 9700pro with 1gb ram. Whole thing cost me about 500quid to build 2 years or so back and it will happily run all the latest games without any problems.

Of course, with dells you are a bit limited as to what you can upgrade, but i reckon with 256mb extra ram in this and a different graphics card you shouldnt have much problem running most things. Of course, you cant really compare a 150quid dell against a decent "state of the art" spec machine which might cost you more, but for 150quid this is definately a bargin.

    RE: RAM

It states that it is dual DDR compatible..
and that it comes with 1 x 256mb...
so there will be a free slot

Graphics card isn't integrated - these systems have "on-board" graphics which is a basic graphics chip which shares memory with your main system.
The motherboard also does not have an AGP graphics slot, so you can only upgrade by putting in a PCI graphics card which are becoming less common.
PC World have some PNY Verto FX5200 PCI cards instore for £59.99 or on their website for about £44+del. A few of the other online providers like Dabs may have PCI cards but not easy to find.

How much is the screen worth, gonna get a TFT at some point. And is the ram is as simple as taking the back off and adding the ram, or will i need to go into the pc system and change things in dos etc?
