Can you please elaborate as I have ordered one and may want to give em a ring to ammend.

I think you might struggle to amend one of these orders, no doubt you will be connected to a call center in India and any alterations to an order may find it dissapearing into a black hole, if they will even accept the alteration. They would more than likely want you to cancel and start again, only to have the cancelled system arrive on your doorstep and off your CC in a month or so's time.

If you just want to do WP and spreadsheet stuff plus play mp3's, surf etc then the Celery will be fine, if your into the latest games then dont buy it in the first place.

I have a couple of Celeron's here from the last lot of low priced Dells before Xmas and they are fine for most stuff but are not games machines.
These should be slightly better as they use the Celeron D cpu but are still not the basis for upgrading to anything more than what they were designed to do which is office type app's. Another 256meg of ram wouldnt go amiss but thats about it to be honest.
Just enjoy it for what it is ;) A nice cheap bit of kit.
All Dell'd up ;) several times over :)

    .
I know exactly what you mean I have just taken delivery of my knockdown photo printer/scanner thingy after a nightmare of an ordeal with their c/s.

Enough of an experience to know if anything goes wrong with this I won't even waste the money on a phone call to them.

Together we can make a difference.
  • Has the price gone up now ? ! Seems to show:
    excl.VAT - £245.53
    incl.VAT - £288.50

I put in an order for a number of these systems, received an Internet Receipt Number but no confirmation yet. Do I just sit and wait ? Also, if the price has now been changed, are they likely to charge me the new total ? Foolishly, I didn't print out the original spec/order page !!

I'm thinking about ordering one of the £186 systems but I wonder if anyone can help with a couple of queries.
Re upgrading memory, according to the Crucial website, 256 ram costs £27 but they say you must fit them in pairs, ie buy two from them and bin the existing ram that comes with the machine. Is this correct?
I would also like to fit a graphics card, how easy are these to fit?
I've never taken the back of my 6 yr old pc before, would it be tricky to do, or could a technophobe manage it?
Finally, would it be worth the extra £30 to upgrade to the 80gb HD?

    Thanks in advance

Find someone else with the same Dell deal and buy his stick of ram or sell him yours, you both end up with matched pairs ;)
£30 plus vat for 40gigs extra h/d space from themwhen you can buy a Maxtor
80gig drive for £34....no contest really.
Wait and try the on board graphics, they are fine for what the machine is capable of.
    HTH.

    Cheers Mike,
I might just go for the basic system then.

You don't necessarily need to put memory in pairs, although the memory chip manufacturers will try to persuade you that you do. Strange that.
As for graphics card upgrades this is DEAD easy - as long as you follow the instructions you shouldn't have any problems. Just make sure you get a PCI (Not PCI-Express) card rather than an AGP card, because these PCs don't have an AGP slot on the motherboard.
PCI cards are becoming less easy to find, and PC World on the web just put the price of their cheapest one up from £44 to £49.99!
Cheapest PCI card I can find is on Dabs.com - an Inno3D FX5200 128Mb PCI for £41.84 plus delivery.

    Cheers

  • I think if you do upgrade to a P4 System, you will receive a new motherboard, which does have an AGP slot, and a higher FSB. Consequently, it opens doors to some proper upgrades.
