thanks gill - just need to cut down my fritter spend, take my lunches and things like that....

I need to work out what I do want for my birthday and make sure it isn't going to blow the budget totally! Luckily I will have been paid a few days before but as I say finances are due to be tight until around July!

It's so easy to fritter when you are at work. Especially if you work with a sociable bunch.

What sort of thing do you fancy doing for your birthday? You don't have to do loads, all my friends had parties for their 50th, but I didn't fancy that as I'm not self confident enough. I just had a meal with family and close friends.

The problem is that my relatives are spread all over the country so it would require planning. Family relationships can be a bit tense too so not sure if I want them there or not? I could go out with OH, my kids and some friends or the friends separately but not made up my mind a) what I want and b) we are skint....

I have just bought some clothes for my birthday - but that is because they were about to go out of stock. I am hoping that my mother in law can buy them herself using her 20% discount but didn't want to be disappointed so got them just in case.....

I did offer to meet my mum next week and spend the day with her but she thinks she already has people coming over....;) nothing to do with my birthday honest!

Hope you have a lovely birthday whatever you decide to do. For my 40th we just went out for a nice meal as kids were at uni and it was nice to have them home for the weekend and we were VERY VERY skint at that time. My 50th last year was a few weeks after our 30th wedding anniversary so I picked a date in between and had an open house party - it was a great day with lots of friends and family popping in running from 4 until late.... When people asked what gift we'd like - I suggested a plate of food for the buffet which was usually accompanied by cans or wine or both. We actually ended up with enough booze to last from August until after the Christmas after the do. I put on a basic buffet and it was added to as various people came. I'd certainly do it again for the next BIG birthday!!

I'm so pleased the job seems to be working out for you.

No offense to anyone, but no way would I have an open house day. Especially with my family! Plus I'm a control freak and couldn't deal with not knowing who/what/when/how was gonna happen. Plus I'd geet bored and fidgety waiting. And anxious about overlapping guests not getting on. Maybe that's just me tho? :o

    hi bz and el

    thoughts for 40th

oH and kids and me meal only
or as above plus one or more of the following

bowling or snowdome party for invited guests - where they pay for themselves! Probably plus eat out somewhere - downside costs - some of my invitees probably too skint for this.... Invited guests likely to be friends rather than family

could try doing a murder mystery night for selected friends (and get someone to babysit kids elsewhere) - bought a game could use as a base for £1. Downside would be would need to tidy whole house which would be a major achievement and possibly slightly unlikely (OH wants to know when he can book the skip for LOL). Would potentially need to buy food, drinks etc etc altho could do a version of "bring and share"

possibly go out with select friends 1:1 or in small group so it is more relationship based... big groups don't really talk the same!

poss OH's family invite week of DD's birthday rather than mine and see if they remember me LOL

poss my family invite to chinese restaurant or similar weekend of my birthday (but not day itself)

    decisions, decisions!

    hi all

Having a weird day today. Went into work early but couldn't get anything to work properly. Went off site to a meeting and as I was coming past my house on the way back I have just stopped off for some lunch. I had porridge as I needed something quick! I had grapes, bananas and strawberries for breakfast -but ate them at work while wrestling with my computer!

Hope you are all doing okay. Hope to be home for around 5pm today which would be good unless I decide to work a little later so can leave early another day! I think I will see how much work I have on!

That sounds like a breakfast my sister would be proud of, she's become a very healthy eater since I last saw her and now eats hardly any chocolate!! Very strange for her but she said she has noticed a difference since she stopped the junk and started eating healthily :) She has IBS and since going onto this new kick she feels much better :) I don't think I could live without my chocolate fix though hehe

Strange about nothing working this morning, thought that usually happened on a Monday morning :) It does here at least :D

Enjoy the rest of your day and hope it doesn't go on too long :)

How about a picnic for your 40th? Everyone brings their own food/drink, kids, blankets, camp seats, frisbees, cricket sets etc!! PIck a local beauty spot with parking.

Totally free, very relaxed so people can talk to lots of different people, people will (hopefully) tidy up after themselves, kids can play, men can get competitive over cricket!!!

Maybe tip a couple of very close friends that after you will be ahving a 'chilli pot' or similar back at yours.

Hmmm sounds good...might bear in mind for my own bash!
