LOL! That's what I meant. I told you I'm a newbie. I'll go and change the name right now....

Silly me! And thanks for the tip :) It's really straggly - will it bush out with leaves during the summer?

It looks like it could do with a bit of TLC! This article tells you exactly what you should do to rejuvenate it. If you're a bit nervous about hacking too much off or doing it wrong and spoiling it (you won't, by the way!) type in 'pruning hydrangeas' on YouTube and there are loads of demos of the right way to do it.

I'll expect to see a pic next summer of a lovely bushy hydrangea!
Oh dear, here we go again.
  • It's lovely to see everyone's pictures!

Van, everything looks like it's coming on really well, all your seedlings look way in advance of anything here. My blueberries and fig are still at the leaf bud stage, not in leaf like yours. You'll be eating well this summer!

The "crab apple" is I think chaenomoles (ornamental quince), the spiky bright green leaves are crocosmia.
Would you be able to post a bigger picture of the tree you need identifying?
  • Thanks Jenny, I hope so! I have a south facing patio that gets really hot during the day.

Wow! I wouldn't mind coming home to that garden and sitting on the patio watching the plants grow. It is a credit to you. :T

Are you going to open it up to the public? Like these brave people do ......

    Hiya!

You are definitely right, it is chaenomoles. I googled it and it was identical. I found a site that says I can even use the fruit for preserving so that sounds good :D

I'll go and take more pics of the tree right now :) I just love MSE, so many helpful people!

UPDATE: Pics taken and they're here. Click on 'All Sizes' to view the larger pics.

And thanks for the tip about the hydrangea... It's now only a foot tall! It was very hard to cut it down because there's some other plant climbing all over it and with tendrills hanging on for dear life. I won in the end though :D
