JANUARY update!
Start figures for 2018:
Mortgage £47,049
Loan. £14,941
Total at Jan 1st £61,990
As at today:
Mortgage £43,856
Loan. £14,364.74
Total today; £58,220.74
Total reduction so far this year: £3,769.26
Total January reduction :£3,769.26
Whooo first update of the year :j it's a good start as extra was paid this month due to not paying the tax bill upfront and instead having dh's tax code lowered.
I've also decided on each update to write the next months predicted op too, it may prevent sneaky overspending
February's planned payments :
£87.83 (not charged this actual amount - some going as an op but its what they take by Dd)
£2,727.20 op
£778 extra op (700 I did not use cc this month and used Xmas cash and had a low budget ) plus £78 pay not adjusted yet to take account of dhs lower tax code until April.
Total £87.83 int
£3,505.20 op
Just to add, mortgage start figure is £49 higher than I ended at in Dec as I clearly made a mistake!MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -
Great reduction NG! Fantastic figures for Jan and well done for avoiding temptation!

Alex, there's a great book called Watching the English by Kate Fox - it talks extensively about class and the thriftiness of the upper classes - either because they have no money or because it's how they keep their money! It's a fascinating read from many different angles (not all about class, it covers pub etiquette and all sorts).Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

When you've done that could you pop down to see Mr GG's brother and fix his two? One 'just needs a belt'* and the other works perfectly as long as you use a slim-line cigar tin and a toothbrush to hold the water collector thingy in place :rotfl:.Mrs. K. and I have been roped into fixing a 25 year old tumble dryer
* quite frankly it might as well need a special bit of spacedust that has to be collected from Jupiter - the chances of him ever actually getting round to getting the part and doing it are roughly the same

I guess we all get attached to stuff GG :rotfl:
I've just been to see 'All the money in the world' at the cinema , about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty's grandson (dh has of course met him and visited his mansion through work :rotfl:) anyway that's not the surreal part. It was in one of the tiny studio cinemas, these seem to attract especially noisy people, but we ignore it. But not today apparently  There were two people in the row behind us (it's only a 4/5 row cinema) who spoke loudly the whole way through the film. Ds2 started with the ahem throat clearing about half way through, followed by two "shhhh's" - they the carried on loudly , so he actually said "sorry, excuse me could you please not talk through the film". They still carried on!
This is a first for us, I am very proud of ds2 for speaking up all be it politely , but why do people act like they are the only ones there? They were my parents age so should know better, I'm glad we have passes as I would have been even more annoyed paying £20 odd to get in.MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -
NG - Well done re. the reduction.

You're forgetting the embodied energy used to make these things in the first place. So not necessarily worse for the environment over its lifecycle.
re. the people in the cinema. To be honest, I don't think age defines ones manners, though.
Mad Vix - money saved is as good as money earned, I suppose.
Gally - :rotfl: Seems I've found a new career as an appliance engineer.2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Hi Alex, I guess it depends on how much energy they use. My friend does two loads of washing a week , I do about 500 ish so she would be ok with an old machine whereas I should have an energy efficient one

I have progress on the birthday front with dd :T she is trying to have the day off and suggested an afternoon tea which I'd been already thinking of. She wants a surprise so it's down to me to choose. Will do a curry the same night for all the family locally, so hopefully just dh and I , dd and boyfriend and the boys if they want to come to the tea.
So far I've found :
Soho hotel- nice, reasonable, good location but no theme
Beauty and the beast themed -sold out until June solidly and not available in July yet.
Harry Potter themed - in Nottingham
Aladdin - not available past early this year
Sherlock Holmes themed - available and a good possibility, £50 a head.
Dr. Who themed - doesn't exist!
I can see I could waste many hours doing research for this

Great, thanks. Perhaps you'd prefer to start with his car, off the road for two years then strangely didn't start even when battery was chargedGally - :rotfl: Seems I've found a new career as an appliance engineer.
.
Or the heating thermostat.
Electric shower?
Leaking toilet?
TV which gets progressively whiter?
Ceiling light?
iPad which won't hold the charge?
Phone with sellotape (mostly) holding the sim card in place?
That will do for starters
.
Sorry for hijack NG. Isn't there a Charlie & the Chocolate Factory themed tea? Or is that just wishful thinking :rotfl:.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I've been getting my money's worth this week with the Cineworld card, Star Wars (again!) tonight with little brother. Not a freebie though as although I used a meerkat code with the pass we went to the imax and I bought him an drink and popcorn, he's often paying for stuff for ds1 if they go to football together so it was nice to treat him for a change.
It's been very busy at work is week and I've decided to up my hours a bit - boo! but for extra pay- yay
dh had offered that a month or so ago but I declined, however a tight financial month and birthdays looming soon persuaded me to accept the offer. It's probably not enough to knock a month off the term but will give a bit more breathing space for essentials like food and hair highlights :rotfl:
Payday today but I shall do the money shuffle tomorrow as it's late now, it will be 16 months left then, I can't believe it! Such a long journey from when I joined in 2010

Great news on the extra hours
and not only is it more money, but less time when you can be spending it too!
It has been an incredible journey - you should be very proud.... but don't get carried away and treat yourself for doing so well just yet
