Disaster! I have been mooching (with a bit of a hangover) on fleabay at cars as usual, and our little mg midget is on there! We loved that car so much :D I am so tempted to do an Alex , stop me please! It would be the worlds best surprise for dh to get his car back with big bow on xmas day. :rotfl:

I've stated many times on MSE that being well educated is about much more than a career (and often university). Personally, I think it very sad a lot of people seem to see gaining a degree being more about job prospects than about the academic experience. Even if that is the only reason, it's difficult to argue that not having a degree is better than having one.

Staying with the career argument, whilst NG's daughter may not need a degree for her chosen career at the moment, another opportunity may present itself to her at a later date and the lack of a degree may hold her back. Much easier to change career by doing a shorter post-grad qualification and gaining experience in the new field than having to study for longer as an undergraduate with the 18/19 year olds.

Ultimately, NG is right that it's her daughter's decision but family attitudes will factor in.

I like MGs. :) Obviously depends on the ££££s and if you'd be happy to have a bit of fun and then sell on in say, one year? If it's reasonably priced and in good order, there's no reason you can't see it as an investment. :)

In an ideal world Alex we would all take a few years to learn stuff we may well end up not needing or using for pleasure. That is not my dd though, she wants to work hard and do well and knows that putting in extra now will help her get ahead, so is focused on what she needs to do to get the job she wants. I should state she has never been pushed by us ever.

As for family attitudes, she has not been influenced at all, she doesn't know my personal opinion of what she should do or anyone else's. I want to raise kids that think for themselves and make their own choices by the time they reach teenage years. Some of the family went to uni, some didn't so there is no undercurrent of approval or disapproval.

I agree that obviously that in some careers its essential to have a degree, but I also see the otherside , where sheer hard work and putting yourself out there are admired qualities. In a way I see that as a stand out feature. I will be just as proud if she goes to uni or not as I already know she will do well.

As for the mg, I would not see it as an investment but more as a family pet.

Personally, I cannot remember many of my peers that thought much beyond wanting to have a good time. :o We all presumed things would just slot into place after uni. Your daughter does seem a lot more grown up, though. :)

  • Good for your DD NG, she sounds like a real go getter and as someone who did a degree in a bit of a half hearted manner I think that internal drive is the most important thing to have. It keeps you focussed whatever your target.

    PS - don't buy the MG!!!!!! :)

Dd is way more responsible than me :rotfl:

Wtrs, I won't buy the mg (probably ;)) its just because it was ours and we loved it and have had to endure the annoying man who bought it driving past our house in at all the time with the roof down, even in the winter! Oh and there was the time he took it to a local car show and told everyone looking that he renovated it, when we paid a friend to work on it over the time we had it.

Xmas presents for the kids located and totted up, ducks for cover - have gone over by £70 each  In my defence I never buy them anything ever and there are boring bits like razors deodorant etc. :o did get good deals on stuff and am giving ds1 £100 cash as he may be going to the spa grand prix next year so will have to pay towards it dd and ds2.have no cash just presents.

2x less presents this year best friends step daughter is now 18 like my dd so we have stopped buying and of course gran :(

Work do tomorrow only a carvery which dh has stratched to at £10.99 per head, drink they will have to pay towards. Starts after they shut early at about 3 or 4 pm , could end up a lively one as there is a pub crawl afterwards and some of them will have a few beers , one year one of them fell asleep in his dinner  dd finally got her id card through today, 18 in july and only just bothered to sort it. I don't feel.in the mood to drink much as i don't want to waste saturday feeling rough, I must remember this when I am actually out :rotfl:
