When I have both the 1gb and 16gb plugged in my PC.
The 1 gb displays in 'My Computer' as one of my three hard disks. when i click it info displayed says it is file system FAT.

The 16gb displays in there as one of 6 Devices with removable storage, the other 5 are card reader slots. when clicked displays System FAT32

Ok have created the 30folders and its gonna take quite a while to upload that movie file to each of the folders on the stick. probably an hour. will continue the other steps once its done

well i did it, and it seemed to finish early as it had lots of files still pending transfer.
Viewed most and had the file inside, two folders came up saying capacity couple of gig and some strange sub folders ranging various creation dates past n present. So removed stick, turned pc off, turned on stuck stick on and viewed content. this is what I got -

ok leeegglestone, it' a bit of a pain but we need to know [ fact not guess ] that the stick's a good one.

It could have been any combination of anything that totals about 12GB or more, I picked that one movie file to make an already tedious job just that little bit easier for you.

If your 16GB stick turns out to be a good one I still don't see why the 16BIT does play, and the 32BIT doesn't, it may turn out to be the case that your DVD player brand doesn't like anything higher than a 16BIT.

If I'm wrong someone will correct me, but as far as I'm aware 99% of all the manufacturers in the big round world sell their external HDD / USB sticks already PC formatted to 16 or 32BIT for [ sales ] compatibility purposes.

  • 40 thousand items @ 98% is a fair dealer, the price is / was right for a genuine retail stick. It all points to being ok, but we will know for sure in an hour!

I've got two games to play in a Starcraft 2 tournament. I'll come back here 9pm [ish]

    thanks anewhope,

"" I/O activity that is required for the file system to function "" - didn't know that was why it wouldn't create 32bit volumes.

It's probably worth considering that the issues that would have severely degraded performance a decade ago would cause significantly less problems on modern hardware, but generally the file system is redundant for modern day to day computing as it was once used for. Unrestricting the limitations would probably cause more problems than it would solve.
"" Outlook Express is a poor choice "" - it is indeed, and Live Mail is certainly a very much better product but I'm long gone 70 years and set in my ways. I already had Live Mail running, in the first instance it was the challenge of reversing a Microsoft decision and making it work that attracted me to it, and later the ' happy warm comfortable feeling ' of something familiar, so I'm still using it.

That's a good enough reason as any I guess :)
BTW we agree on how good Extended File Allocation Tables are, yet another Microsoft licence / patent issue if I remember

A lot of major manufacturers of consumer devices have already licensed the technology from Microsoft, so I don't think it'll be long before it starts making headway into the consumer arena considering the demand for Flash Memory hungry devices.

If you look at the negative feedback reports on Ebay, it seems there are a number of people reporting the 16GB flash drive does not work, return and get refund and then buy a reputable flash drive.

Agreed, I decided around post #20 that the stick was a bad'n, but in fairness to the O/P went through the full diags to eliminate other possibilities. I also provided info on bodged controller chips / to educate others reading the thread to 90% fill a stick, re-boot and empty a stick, to make sure it's a gud'n.

If it is a bad'n and ' leeegglestone ' paid via PayPal s/he will get the money back !

Looking at the image of the FOLDER names it's a classic picture of [ ASCii ] corrupted FAT's which I've seen hundreds of times. It's equally an indication of a bodged chip.

I'm convinced it's a bad'n, do what you can to get your money back. If you buy again try to buy a brand name from a brand company, so Cruzer® from somewhere like Play.COM or O/clockers where you can get a straight ' swap out, even the expensive Argos do so Cruzer® at £25 and Kingston at £20.

If it's any consolation to you and others reading this, anyone can get caught on e-bay. About 4 years ago I bought 24x8GIG sticks and they were all U/S. Fortunately I harvested the names of the dozen or so other buyers at the point the hit their buy button, wrote to them, worked out a consensus, and we all put in a collective claim to paypal and were reimbursed.

NOTE changes in ebay mean you can't get [ harvest ] the ebay addy's of bidders / purchases now !
