The letter I got from them was in my X's details, and for my old claim as they had to stop my claim to start a new single one.... do I need to renew for a claim that was closed back in Jan ? Will they do the renewal from my new claim or do I do that through the normal number ? I know I'm due them an overpayment of about £1.5k for my old claim... will they take that off my new claim over the course of a year ? I'm so confused, don't yet have my renewal forms for either claim so can't phone them to check anything :(

    Hi Afterdark

As far as I am aware you only need to finalise your old claim giving them your income/childcare etc.... you can probably do this through the normal tc helpline.

If the overpayment is from your joint claim then they won't reclaim the overpayment through your single award - you wiil need to make other arrangements with them i.e 12 monthly repayment plan.

Unfortunately the information that was used to populate the letters was taken from the National Tax Credits system back in January... this was unavoidable due to the timescales involved. I would recommend you call the Specialist Renewals team and they should help you to finalise your previous joint award. Should they be unable to take your information they will refer you to the main Tax Credit helpline but it would be best to call the renewals team first.

And the overpayment on your joint claim will be dealt with differently. An adviser will probably contact you to discuss methods of repayment... but you will only be liable for 50% of the overpayment.

Does this mean that all claimants whether they have received the specialist renewal letter or not are checked as well as those who have had these letters because everyone can make mistakes whether your claim is high or not.My claim is far from high so not sure why i ve been chosen.

There are continuous background checks that go on throughout the year to make sure that everyone is receiving the correct Tax Credit award and to ensure that those who fraudulently claim are caught out. While these checks are not part of the current exercise, when you call the Specialist Renewals team they will check every detail on your Tax Credit award just to make sure everything is in order and hopefully limit the risk of an overpayment occuring later in the year.

Am I correct in assuming that the Tax Credit People can do a pretty detailed search on a person just by their National Indurance Number? So therefore if there is anything suspicious they( tax credits) would know already?
  • these letters are real, try this, ring them, do usual security, the ask a simple question to the advisor " go to my payment screen and quote me the last 3 digits of my account i have my tax credits paid into please" have your account to hand so you can check, only HMRC will know, and a quick response back--- they are HMRC. even if don't renew, try this test
  • All tax credit staff will flag up anything they see as suspect, high awards are checked, why not, £8500 and over. some awards are over £30,000. If you have nothing to hide why worry and yes details declared are checked on other systems as there are some bad people out there who lie.

Question to miss112. Do you think they asked alot of questions because you rang the specialist team late? And out curiosity what kind of questions did they ask about your childcare?
