Don't forget to try sex if it isn't too uncomfortable. It does sound like something might happen though, congrats!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this on but looking for a little advice or similar stories.
We had our dating scan on Tuesday and were told that the NT measurement was 5.5mm and also that the baby has fluid along the abdominal wall of 1.4mm.
I have been referred to a specialist fetal unit for another scan and a CVS procedure tomorrow (needle through stomach to take a sample of the placenta).
We are so scared! Seeing the baby moving etc has made it even worse - we feel so attached to the baby already and would hate for something to be seriously wrong.
Have any of you been through the procedure? I am absolutely terrified.
Did they tell you what the fluid on abdominal wall was called? did they tell you anything else about it?
The worst thing you can do is stress and stress the baby out. Its the hardest thing in the world but you have to try and relax for bubs
Not sure what it is they're checking out. If you have a name for it i'd like to read up on it.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -

Hi Bufger - thanks for responding. On my scan notes the fluid on the abdominal wall was called an "oedema". They didn't mention anything else apart from notifying us about it as they did the scan.
It all seemed to tie in with the neck/head fluid reading which they told us is usually related to Down's, Edward's and Patau's Syndrome (all chromosomal). They are the main three they are testing for tomorrow but they are doing a full spectrum of tests for chromosome defects/abnormalities.Proud to be dealing with my debts :money:0 -
In that case did they give you a risk or downs, ie you were at high or low risk (im guessing high if they're taking fluid?). They usually give a 1 in xxxxxx number for this.
I'll have a read about it now and link some material i find so you can further understand whats going on too. Its hard when you dont know whats going on so arm yourself with info and sit back and watch tv or read for the rest of the dayMFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -

'normal' sonographers are taught to look for what is 'normal' so the fact they have picked up something which is not within their remit does not mean something is definitely wrong.. it just means your little one is a little out of their capacity.. and may have a perfectly correcable condition.. ot it may just sort itself out over the next few weeks!
The procedure is pretty much like a smear in that you have a caving party up your faff.. a thin needle takes a sample of placental tissue via the cervix and this can be checked for genetic conditions. You will need to rest up a few days and may have a bit of bleeding afterwards. hey can tell the gender from this as well.. if you wanted to know.
Fingers crossed all is ok for you and the sonographer is being over cautious and all will be fine.. let us know how you get on (((hugs)))LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Hi Peel, i think i found the name of the condition they're looking for is (see if this rings any bells): Hydrops Fetalis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrops_fetalis
Theres some info on it. An oedema is the term for a collection of fluid in tissue (ie in the ankles and legs is common in women). In a fetus this is usually from excess blood being pumped around the body. There could be a number of causes. According to the stuff ive just read one possible and common cause is if the baby is anemic, this can be sorted during pregnancy.
Dont worry. It could be something that sorts itself out, it could be a false alarm or it could be something that can be sorted out with some help from the experts. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a positive outcome for youMFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -
Just wanted to share my proud mummy moment (+ PG tears:o)
Just got it in to a letter in the post from DS's school. He starts year 10/GCSE's in Sept and they've offered him the chance to do an extra GCSE (Classical Civilisation:eek::eek:) that is normally only offered to posh public schools in Devon, because he is a "gifted and talented" student:D:D:D:D:D It will involve a 2hour lesson after school every week and very hard work so it will need discussing when he gets home. There's a mention of a trip to Greece as well!!:T
Universities see it as a "highly respected" qualifiaction so I hope he seriously considers it! Ever so proud of my clever little man:D:D:D
And I've just had Wimpy chips and coke float YUMMMMMMMMMY!:DBLOWINGBUBBLES:kisses2: SMARTIE120 -
Peelprincess my sister in law had the NT measurement being a bit big picked up at her 20 week scan, they had an amnio and some other tests and everything was fine. The baby when he was born was 10lb5oz so we just think perhaps the dates were wrong or he was v big even early on. Fingers crossed for you. x
Been to starbucks for lunch then to the pond to feed the ducks. My right hip is just so sore though, I can literally only walk a few minutes or stand for about 2 before needing to sit. It makes me feel like crying it hurts so much. I am going to phone the Drs and see if the midwife can see me on Friday when she's there, hopefully she could do my bloods too rather than sitting at the hospital waiting in phlebotomy. If not maybe one of the Drs can see me this week. When I am sitting down I can hardly move my right leg at all.
Tomorrow we're going on a tour of the Royal Opera House which dh has wanted to do for ages, I am dreading it as there will be some standing around no doubt.Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0 -
