I am thinking of one for exactly the same reason xmas. I do have a babasling (bargain from TK Maxx) but i'm not too sure about it tbh! I love the look of the joey/mei tai style slings, they look really easy to use.
I am the same as you though, really need to try a few styles out. We have regular slingmeets near me, not sure if there are some in your area, maybe try google as I think there is an actual slingmeet website.

Kitkat - couple of cushions and I'm sure baby won't mind going in a wheelbarrow, lots of room for them to spread out in
I do really like the idea of using a wrap sling for bubs. Daft question, but how do you babywearers go about wearing baby when it's cold and you need a coat? I have images of poor bubs getting it's nose smushed by my buttons, and it wouldn't fit under my coat (hate shopping, don't wanna buy a new winter coat!)

A friend of mine used a wrap type sling for her little boy until he was 9 months old - then when he got heavy and she needed him in a buggy he would hate it and scream
Also I'd imagine it'd be a pain to put on and take off for driving?
I quite like the idea too especially as we're still using buses atm and it'd be nice to be a compact package!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

xmaslolly76 wrote: »Just wondered as ive never used one but how do slings work as far as your back is concerned i had a baby carrier once for my Daughter as she wanted to constantly watch what i was doing so strapped to my front facing outwards which she loved but it damned near broke my back and i was put off any kind of baby carrier from then on. I have been on here for quite sometime now and i know alot of you swear by them so do they hurt your backs at all? I think it would be nice to be able to be close to baby but still have my hands free :-)
I have a wilkinet which is just heavenly.. and I have had a couple of these for the last 4.. took my hat long to discover them. then when I had iddles I got a storchie.. (wrap sling.. but expensive!) and it is absolutely wonderful.
the ones with a million buckles and clips are just evil.. the baby bjorn was the most evil thing I ever came across.. I didn't like the ergo, tomy, tommee tippee or pouch slings either.. they were all wrongly shaped for me and put loads of pressure on my shoulders and particularly across my hips.. I have arthritis in my hips so walking was impossible.. but with both the wilki and the storchie I spent hours with them attached. I used both from them being very tiny.. DS3 was about 4.5lb and the pushchair was jut too hard and he would be hysterical.. he would be bounced all over as there was no weight to him to hold himself down if we went over a bump.fernliebee wrote: »Have a little look about online and you should find details of a local slingmeet. They should be able to let you have a gander at their different types and maybe try them out etc. It can be a costly mistake getting a sling that doesn't meet your requirements, so good idea to try some out.
Pigpen will be able to tell you more than I can, as I believe she has tried a few types. I just stuck with the first type I got. I just bought a long strip of fabric to make my wrap sling as I didn't know if I would use it much, I ended up loving it and it only cost a few quid! There are loads of vids on youtube that teach you how to tie them as they look a bit confusing at first!
the long strip of cheap fabric is probably about the right choice!! I love my wrap sling.. I even kept it after I sold all my other baby stuff so it is one of the few things I still have from the older bunch.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I am hoping to go to a slingmeet, but of course they're all when I'm at work. Nearer the time I might take some flexi time and go along I think. I have a friend who loves slings and used to be in business making them (she's a vicar about to have her 4th child now!) and she is giving me a ring sling but is insisting I make sure I've been properly shown how to use it (she doesn't live near). I'd like to get some material for a wrap type too...what kind of material do you need?
My hip is v sore tonight after a 20 minute walk today. Can't believe that only a month ago I was on hols walking 9 miles of coast path in a day (it wasn't easy but no way I could do a couple of miles now). I think I am going to have to get someone else to lead the work lunchtime walks too...at least then I can hobble at the back rather than set the pace at the front!
sir monster - fab let's do thurs am then, maybe about 10.30/45. Can you keep your eyes peeled for the maclaren xt at mothercare? When we went to babysrus they didn't have it and i daren't drag dh out again unless I am sure they have it!
smartie - how did the drs go?

I have a babasling too, seemed to me to be the best for breastfeeding with discretely in public or when people are round. Didn't cost me anything as such though as it was bought with vouchers I was given by work when I went off on leave.
as for me, I'm now into my last week before my EDD (or will be in an hour and a half)! So surreal and I'm starting to get a bit nervous about the whole thing. House is almost ready though and I *think* I'm about organised. I still can't quite believe that this whole thing ends with me becoming someone's mum - as daft as it sounds, it just seems so huge! Getting loads of really achy, period-like pains and my bump seems to have almost disappeared sometimes (assume it's because he's engaged now), feeling nauseous quite often too over the last week or so too so everything is kind of gearing up for the big day - I hope anyway - don't fancy this for up to three more weeks!0 -
Thanks for the info about slings Pigpen, I have no idea what I'm getting yet but I do have a lot of problems with my lower back so I will consider this when choosing. I don't want anything too feminine as OH plans to use it too, probably more than me if I have problems with my back.
Please can someone ban me from Ebay, I have won 4 items today just bidding the 1st bid and I think I need to stop now! I do feel better after a bit of retail therapy though!0 -
Esio: thanks for posting your list
not long to go now for you. I've got a lot longer to go but sometimes it dawns on me I'm going to be a mum and it scares me terribly! I feel like I'm too immature! Can't wait to start the new adventure though

delain- My DD grew out of hers as she decided she was too independent and didn't want to be attached to me anymore, she wanted to go in her buggy instead so I think it all depends on the child- like anything really. She also decided at about a year that she was too big for the buggy and just wanted to walk everywhere little monkey! Oh well at least I don't have to bother with a double now anyway!
Also when I used to drive I would just leave it on done up, and then when I got out of car I could just slip bubs back into it. I prob looked like a fool but ah well!
Bexta- I had a summer baby so had the opposite problem I was always a bit hot when I carried DD, however once she was bigger and it got colder I still found she kept me very warm so would just put a jacket/ cardi on and not do it up. A few friends carried on using their maternity coats or big jackets and just did them up round bubs, but I don't think you would need a new coat tbh!
Pigpen- I unfortunately lent my wrap out and it doesn't look like it is going to come back! Grrrr! But have been given a ringsling. TBH not sure if this is going to work for me as it looks like it will be lopsided weight wise, and hurt my shoulder but we shall see. I will be straight off to the shops to get myself some more fabric if it doesespecially as I now have DD to run about with I reckon I will need it a lot more this time round.

Eurgh! Can't sleep!
Just remembered, I went into mothercare today and they had quite a lot of good sale stuff. 2 packs of maternity bra's for £18 rather than £28, and a 2 pack of nursing nightdresses £10 instead of £20. Loads of maternity clothes (bit late in the day for me though) and lot's of baby clothes too. Didn't look too hard as I didn't have my purse on me, but if you were intending to get something anyway may be worth a look.
Hopefully now this critical piece of information (come back rolleyes smiley) is imparted to you lovely ladies my brain (if it can still be described as such) will allow me to sleep! Night night all!0
