Some of you people are so rude! I myself am a chugger and proud of the work I do saving lives every single day. Some of you clearly don't understand what you're banging on about, so I thought I'd go to the trouble of registering and explaining for you.

First of all, we're not going door to door to guilt trip you or force you into signing up. Some people are simply not aware of the work we do and we're just on the street to explain what we the charity stand for and promote. We're only taking up two minutes of your time to do so. Its really not that much of an effort to give up two minutes just to listen to what we have to say, even if you're not in a position to make a donation with us. I mean, how do you even know you want to give if you don't even know who we are?

As for not wanting to give your bank details, all we need to make a direct debit, because we are a charity and different rules apply to us, is your bank account number and sort code. They're written on the bottom of every cheque you right for God's sake! If you went down to the bank with just your bank account number and sort code to get some money out they'd laugh you out of the place.

And whats all this crap about us getting paid £300 to £400 a week? We get paid about £7 an hour. We're not paid on commision, because that'd encourage hard selling which we don't practice. We work because we care about the charity. If we were interested in making £300 to £400 a week we'd go work in sales. And none of your money goes towards our wages. Your money goes straight to the charity, we're paid by gift aid.

So there are the facts, just so you know them. And please don't tell us to f off because it won't discourage us, we'll just be stood at the bottom of the road having a good laugh about the ignorant git we've just had at the door.

You are just a bloody nuisance.

Go and get a proper job.

Or better still, don't knock on my door or try and trap me in the supermarket in the first place. This week charity, next week electricity supplier, the next probably a martial arts school or gym membership. No different from the lucky heather scammers.

Why should I have to give you even 5 seconds of my time?

I have to knock on your door. Its my job.

Tesphen - You are in the wrong job if you think that you are entitled to even 2 seconds of someone's time. I actually find that expectation to be quite arrogant. Aside from that, aren't you wasting 5 seconds of your own time talking to someone that is never going to sign up? Or is 5 seconds all you need to get into the hard sell tactics?

I just think its politeness to give someone 5 seconds. If someone walked up to you on the street or knocked on your door to ask you for directions or something you wouldn't tell them to f*** off, would you? Its common courtesy is all. And I've already said, I, and no-one in my organization is allowed to use hard sell tactics.

And I've already said that I wouldn't tell anyone to f off. If I gave 5 seconds to everyone who stopped me in my local city centre high street it would soon add up! Plus I have my doubts about it only being 5 seconds. If you have a job that involves stopping members of the public on the streets or knocking on their doors you are going to have to accept that people just don't have the time and if they aren't interested then they aren't going to talk to you. It's got nothing to do with manners

Asking someone for directions is a lot different to asking them for money.

For every sign-up we get, we have raised on average £700 for our charity.

Over the course of a lot of years maybe, say the average person gives £5 a month, it will take over 11 and a half years for the raw earning to be over £700.

  • I have 30 minutes to have my lunch break. Every day I'm accosted by people in tabards asking me to support xxx charity, I don't have time to discuss it. So I either walk on by (in which case I usually get shouted at) or I say, sorry no time... in which case they then shout at me on my return to work, saying "but you've time to shop in boots or wherever"

Yes, it's MY lunch and I will give to charities of my choice. Not to be bullied into it.

My girlfriend has worked both for charities and for other companies doing door to door and street selling.

She said she loved charity work because of the buzz you get when someone actually engages and seems to care about what you believe in. The majority of people I met that have worked with her really seemed to care about what they were selling, sometimes to the point of being over-the-top and in your face (hence why I think some people find them so irratating!)

On the other hand, she has worked for an gas+electricity company whom she did door-to-door for. She was appalled at how they target the elderly and lied to people about various things, while still selling the product legally. Most of the people I met from that line of her work were quite simply not very nice people... all they care about is getting that sale, and all the companies care about is that they make that sale.

I'd much prefer charities to be posting leaflets to me labelling what they do, rather than confronting me on my doorstep to tell me. I'm not one to be pressured into things, but I know a lot of people are. Having said that, if they are nice and it's not commission based, I don't see why it should cause any problems.

However, street sellers really irk me. A while back, one even got my phone number and then texted me asking if I wanted to go on a date! Amusing, but I'm pretty sure that's not legal....!

Firstly, I would be suspicious of anyone knocking on my door asking for directions, A common tactic burglars use to check occupancy.

There is a stark difference between asking someone on the street for directions and knocking on someones door asking for bank details for some charity.

I would not find it polite to stop someone in their tracks and ask for directions, the time or anything, however your not exactly asking people for directions are you?

Now you have reduced this "2 minutes" to "5 seconds", again this is 5 seconds of my time, I am entitled to do what I wish with, especially in my own home. You are STILL in no position to determine what I do with them in my own home. The Gas or Electric meter reader might, the delivery courier may also, but not YOU!

Quite possibly after the first "3 seconds" of me saying "No thanx", any further discussion from yourself other than "Ok Sir, good bye", telling you to "F off" may well be the least of your problems, as my dog does not take 5 seconds to sink his teeth in.

Finally, its quite obvious to everyone your organization is not allowed to use hard sell tactics, be that your not actually selling anything.

Try not to confuse the difference between asking a passer by on the Street for directions with knocking on peoples doors begging them to join a charity you work for.

If you enjoy your job, try not to enjoy it at my expense or in my time, whether or not its your job to knock on my door to beg, its my job to tell you "No!". Believe me, I dont enjoy having to waste my 5 seconds having to do this job. ;)

The minimum donation you can make is £8 a month and most of my sign-ups come from people in their 20s and 30s.

I have a very worthy job. I get to work outside in the sunshine alongside some lovely people, and I get to meet interesting people every day.

Plenty of people are happy to speak to and engage with me, I certainly get enough decent interaction from people to make up for the middle-aged grumps. Its not wrong at all, I've made plenty of money for charity, and had lots of fun doing it. :D

I love having a laugh with my teamsters at ignorant idiots like yourself after I ring your doorbell. :p
