hi,

i have read through the long mattress thread which was closed but i am still wondering what to get, i have tried quite a few beds mostly pocket sprung memory foam, but i did try a dunlopillo latex mattress in Fenwicks, whilst expensive i believe these are very good quality?

i have just purchased a new wooden sprung slatted bed and need a double mattress as my old one is past it and using a topper is annoying me as it slides off all the time!

can anyone advise what is better? latex or memory foam? i am thinking the combo of pocket springs and latex seems the best way to go but i really don't know where to start, i can never tell lying on them in shops what i should be going for, please help!

:)
thanks.

As far as support goes there isn't much difference between memory foam and latex. Memory foam is slow reacting, and latex has more bounce. Also latex is cooler.

If you go for latex then make sure that it has a 2" full layer as many manyfacturers only use a very thin layer, and some only put it in zones.

If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.

Thanks Tim, are there any bad points of using latex over memory foam?

I didn't know you could get a satisfaction guarantee, does this involve free delivery too?

I don't know of any small online retailers that will be interesting. i did like the dunlopillo coronation mattress til i read what you said about pillow tops, that kinda put me off. also the price!

Only id you have latex allergies.

That would depend on the seller.

There have been a few posts on MSE saying that Dunlopiio aren't as good quality as they used to be. This probably dates back to when they were bought out by the Hilding Anders group.

Tim, I take it you are not allowed to recommend any particular ones?

I'm afraid not, as it could be viewed as advertising as I am in the trade.

even recommending bed brands not specific sellers? i have seen la romantica seems to have a good rep on here, never seen one though, but beyond that no clue which are good and bad, my mum just bought a relyon 1250 airflow or something from bensons wasn't too happy when i said it didn't have a good rep on here lol

This whole mattress thing is getting pretty desperate now, i woke up this morning with pains right through the middle of my back up to my neck, not good :(

Can anyone tell me what brands do double sided latex, i can only find la romantica that do this, surely there are more?

Anyone make any recommendations? i know Tim cannot. Really struggling to find dual sided latex mattresses anywhere!

not sure between firm and medium, how can you tell? heard somethinga bout if u can slide your hand under your back then its too firm if you cannot then its too soft should be a slight struggle to get it in. not sure this is relevant as i tend to sleep on my side with my arm between 2 pillows.

lol who knew it would be harder to find a mattress than a house!

The test you mention is actually for support, and not firmness. As latex gives excellent support you would find it difficult to slide your hand under the small of your back with either soft or firm.

As far as firmness goes it is personal preference. So try a few out to see what you prefer.

Remember the site etiquette 'Please be nice to all MoneySavers', we can disagree but let's keep it friendly............we don't want to remove posts.;)

Why's my reply to a new user been removed?

Sadly new posters seem to get abuse more often than they used to. Often it's because they ask questions that have already been asked, or post in the wrong place.

There's also sometimes a "this is our board" attitude that seems to not want new posters coming in and ruining a pre-established clique.
To be utterly clear - both of these go against the philosophy of this site.

MoneySaving should be fun. Everyone using these boards is here for the same reason, to save money. The site's motto is "Please be nice to other MoneySavers". If you see someone being abusive to newbies please report them to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Yes, we're aware some may be spammers, trolls or alter egos, but whatever you think please just report them without responding on the Forum discussion itself.

Regular site users can be incredibly helpful in combating this problem. If you have the time, instead of getting frustrated and writing "this has been asked before" please post "Hi, you may not have seen this, but it may answer your question" and give the link to where it's been answered before.
