No no no Louise get the coach !! Definately!

the coach takes you right inside the site gates. You dont need to change, wait around for the shuttle with the millions of other people. You simply get on in victoria and cruise straight in.

If it wasnt for a complicated arrangement with us needing to take our dogh to the inlaws while we are there, my vote would always be the coach.

How do they steal your stuff if its down the bottom inside your sleeping bag?

I am flapping a bit about getting to Glasto. I've bought a cheap train ticket to London (from N Yorkshire) on Weds arriving london about noon and on Monday leaving London about 4pm. I guess the national express is the best way to get to the festival, but would anyone say no, the train would be better. Its so blooming expensive.

I could drive but it would take me about 7 hours and petrol is so dear too.

    Heylp.

It wasnt in the sleeping bag, just at the bottom of the tent :o I know i know we told him it was stupid. lol

    Toilet advice:
Tell him to use the long drops. The portaloos are absolutely minging and stink to high heaven. The long drops are just that - a seat over a long drop. it doesn't block up, and because it's just a cubicle with no roof, the smell dissipates a bit more. Just remember to whistle, as last time I went they had no locks on the doors!

We always used to camp in the field behind the cinema field, about half way up. it was much quieter.

Don't take anything valuable, or that you mind getting ruined. if it rains it's an utter mudbath.

If he can take 2 medium-sized bamboo canes, he can bash em in the ground outside his tent and hang his wellies upside down on them. Saves getting muddy wellies in the tent.

I took a smallish rucksack to carry around during the day that had money, camera, jumper and waterproof poncho in it. That way I didn't have to go back to my tent until bed time.

Tell him to have a look at all the other stuff that goes on. The ENO played both years I went, and there was a theatre group. basically, he needs to make the most of the money he spent on the ticket - he can sleep when he gets back.

Sounds like there should be an MSE meet at Glasto and all the other festivals - there, an idea for Martin, an MSE pennant for festival tents! :rotfl:

Tell him do NOT leave anything of any value in the tent when he's not there. One year our tent was broken into twice. We had padlocked up the zips so the theives just cut their way in through the sides with a pen knife. We'd left nothing valuable in there, but they did toss our stuff around which was nasty. And then, once we'd repaired it with duct tape, they did it again the next day, !!!!!!!s.

Funny though, in the really wet and muddy years I've been, that hasn't happened. I think when it's pouring down there's a community/Blitz spirit that goes out the window when it's a sunny year.

SUNBLOCK! I'm a redhead so this is paramount for me, but you see so many lobster-red people around the site looking uncomfortable or needing to be treated in the medical areas, with their festival spoilt and risking cancer. I'm sure some of them have done it passing out in the sun after over-indulging in something or other  but often it is just because it takes hours to walk anywhere and you get burnt without even realising (by the way, tell him if he is going from the main stage to the second stage, it is at least 30-40 mins walk even though it doesn't look that far). Sunblock can be bought on-site but of course they charge a premium for it.

Otherwise lots of binbags, string, loo roll, cereal bars and chocolate!

Incidentally yes, tell him to find some decent landmarks to navigate back to his tent by, but be warned if he chooses to go by somebody else's flag or distinctive tent, they might move (eg to be with other friends) or pack up and leave early, so you can't always rely on that alone.

If you are picking him up on Sunday night and he has an exam on Monday... good luck! There is a pick-up point near the site but you will have to queue in horrendous traffic to get to it. He will have to miss at least the final main band on Sunday night to stand a chance of getting out. Make sure he agrees to this and isn't going to "forget". Expect to spend at least an hour in traffic getting out of the immediate area, maybe longer (then perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised). Bear in mind that 150,000 attend Glastonbury which makes it into a "city" the size of Oxford. When that many people all decide it's time to leave, it simply cannot be done without bad queues, so traffic is a nightmare from Sunday evening through until Tuesday.

He will have an amazing time though!

    Take a white carrier bag.

You will get sick of people tripping over your tent ropes, and if you tie a white carrier bag round em it helps show up but no one will bother taking it.

Baby wipes. Great for all kinds of things. Some plasters, tape, light rope, spare battery for camera, I second a cheap phone and loads of bags.

Don't padlock tents, you might as well have a sign that says PLEASE ROB ME on your tent.
There are free lockups available all over the festival site. Take a small rucksack and put extra cash, keys, etc in it and hand it in and go back each day for a cash top-up.
