I'll be there working this year and don't have a huge amount to add to what's already been great advice posted by others

As they're getting train down they'll be getting into Castle Cary station and then shuttle bussed to the site so getting to a supermarket may well be tricky en route and may involve going off site once again- but as others have said the food is excellent at glastonbury but all depends on budget

Think carefully about where they want to camp as it can be a long walk from where the bus will drop them off- as someone else said Pennards is popular but a fair old trek from the bus station (i did it in my 1st year in 2003 so know!) so maybe look at places nearer- all depends which stages they wish to be near

People have mentioned joe bananas- they do do it where you can order stuff (tents and the like) online and pick it up at the festival

And finally e-festivals is a great site with some good forums for advice

I've not been in 5 years so looking forward to getting back

    Hi there,

Hope he enjoys the festival. My boys wanted to go to glastonbury this year, but the prices were extortionate so no chance of that.Think we might go to green man instead.

    Anyway back on topic.

    Some essentials:-
    tin opener - or penknife
    head light
wet wipes - believe me they come in handy, from hands to backside
    toilet roll
    handy pack tissues
COMDOMS- yes we know but they are at that age.
Penknife: - i saw some in the poundshop today with a
    tin opener bit on it.
    sleeping bag
    jumper - its freezing
tent - get something bright o go on top.
lighter (in case to make a fire, cook food)
    extra pair of socks
    wellies
duck tape: -to goon wellies (stops water from getting in) - in case the weather is wet. fix tent etc
black bags - just in case its wet to go over clothes
alcohol - just in case - takes boxes of cider / wine or they won't let you in
food - pot noodles, pasta, snacks like crisps, apples (ideal as they won't get squashed or go off)

Tell him to look our the
hari krishna tent - at certain times of the day they provide free drinks and food! We did this at the green gathering, the food was lush. lots of cushions to sit.

Tent - i used to put something colourful over the top so i could easily find it drunk/sober

Keep all money, phone etc on you day / night
keep belonging in tent - the amount of wellies that get nicked are unreal.

    and above all have fun!

Never been to Glastonbury but have been to V festival several times.

The first yr we took loads - beer, food, tent, couple of chairs, blow up bed, duvet etc. My arms hurt. Never again

Second yr, we took half as much, my OH nearly died carrying it all.

    3rd yr we took:
Blow up bed with battery operated pump and duvet(the BEST thing ive ever invested in. The ground is cold, and i cant sleep on a hard surface!!
    Lots of baby wipes
Sanitizer hand gel altho this was always in the porta loos too.
didnt bother with the loo roll as baby wipes worked just as well.
    Money
    Torch
For the girls - a skirt is better than jeans, esp when you need to go!!! You'll get muddy too so jeans are horrid when theyre wet. Shorts or jogging bottoms are much better. We always take old clothes too as they end up getting wrecked! Dont forget the wellys!! You look daft if you havent got them on....everyone wears them at a festival

........and that was pretty much it!!

Food they're planning on buying at a supermarket close by - is that feasible?

I've not read through the whole thread so apologies if already covered. I live a few miles away from Pilton and I'm assuming he will get off the train at Castle Cary and catch the shuttle bus to Worthy Farm. There is no supermarket on the way unfortunately. There is a Tesco in Shepton Mallet which is right off the track but it's gets a bit mad in there just before Glasto. Pilton Stores always shuts over the festival weekend.

I've been quite a few times, but living so close and being a bit of a wuss I get a residents day ticket for the Sunday :o I would recommend a double layered tent (I got soaked in a cheapo tent!) and a flag so you can spot it easily.

Have just been to Jazz fest in the US, and cannot recommend Zip Lock bags enough - you can put your phone in one and still be able to text etc, and keep money and other valuables into one so that if the weather does turn nasty, your essentials will be dry even if your feet aren't! I also bought some surf shoe type things - they were very cheap, dried easily every night and I personally preferred them to wellies because the weather here was hot so I didn't want to be wearing big boots all day, but obviously that will depend on how the British summer goes! I would also recommend a small package of over the counter drugs for all kinds of minor ailments, like aspirin, indigestion tablets, hangover remedies and diarrhoea tablets as there's nothing worse than being trapped somewhere feeling rough and not being able to do anything about it.

Hope they have a good time!

Also ( not for kids!) but for any adults ;) taking spirits, I always take a cheap plastic funnel for decanting spirit & mixer into another plastic bottle to carry around- minimising waste there MSE style

Also smokers, take a small jar or tin to use as an ashtray- leave no trace ;)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Tell them to memorise where their tent is!! Preferably make a thorough mental note of nearby landmarks (flags, wacky tents etc are good for this). Your tent seems so obvious when you've just pitched it and you're stood next to it...how could you possibly lose it?? :rotfl: Come midnight, when it's pitch black, you've had a drink or two, the place is a sea of drunk people all trying to find their tents, you've lost your mates, your phone has no signal, it's p1ssing it down and you're just trying to stay upright in the mud, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

Hope he has a fab time!

    Gwen

Oh yes, definitely this can be a problem, I usually do about 2 or 3 festivals a year and tend to get a little bit drun :o so drunk one year in fact I had to call my bf and say I was lost on way back from the toilet...fun conversation me- Im lost, bf - what can you see me - a red tent and a blue tent! lol. He found me eventually We tried a flag one year and that was stolen on the 2nd day.

Also if he doesnt use the lockers tell him to sleep with any valuables by his head (if he has his feet by the entrance to the tent) One year we had 8tents by us where someone had gone in in the middle of the night and stolen everything while the people were in there!!! Had one group by us who were german and spanish and their passports were stolen. My friend had left his wallet in his jeans and they took everything out of them and left them in the middle of the campsite

How do they steal your stuff if its down the bottom inside your sleeping bag?

I am flapping a bit about getting to Glasto. I've bought a cheap train ticket to London (from N Yorkshire) on Weds arriving london about noon and on Monday leaving London about 4pm. I guess the national express is the best way to get to the festival, but would anyone say no, the train would be better. Its so blooming expensive.

I could drive but it would take me about 7 hours and petrol is so dear too.

    Heylp.
Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!
