hanks Dixxi, think we have a mix up here somewhere. I posted th original question. As noted there are lots of differing views. We have decided that we are going to go for it, to Traveldge Kings Cross Royal Scot. Unfortunately, the rate has now increased from £26 pn to £70 pn. Thats what I get for faffing around. Oh well,:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Sorry, don't agree with not staying in Kings Cross, the Travelodge is only five minutes wakf from the station, I think Jack the Ripper is dead these days!
Sorry, but I must disagree. As a fit, able bodied 18 year old male I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself. If with friends, almost anywhere in Central London is fine. However, although I wouldn't say that we avoid Kings Cross at night, we certainly don't visit often or for long. If it were my little sisters/friends I would EXTREMELY STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT THEY DO NOT STAY IN THE KINGS CROSS AREA. It is not a nice area, and junkies don't behave like rational people. They will stab you for £10 thats in your pocket.
You choose your risks, but when in London this seems like a silly risk to take considering the amout of quality hotels and B&B's in London.

Well, years of living in the area, all I can say is that huge police presence in Kings Cross in the past few years has made immeasurable difference. I would feel generally safe in the area, but it's not particularly nice - if the option to stay elsewhere presented itself I would take it. But I wouldn't panic about staying there, i'm sure you'll be fine.
The downside to the police crackdowns in Kings Cross is that all the drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes have moved to where I live in Camden :mad:0 -
I've booked to go to the kings Cross Royal Scot for 4 nights with my husband and 3 young children in August and after reading these comments I'm seriously worried. Don't think i can get my money back because the rooms were on special offer :eek:0

i have read all the replies and can honestly say i have stayed here with very young children and once with 12 teenage girls and we never had any problems in the area. when we stay away from home no matter where we are we just have to use our common senses. no where is 100% safeIT'S ALL ABOUT ME!!!:j:money:0

Hmmm! Where do I start?
The Kings Cross area has undergone massive regeneration in the last few years and isn't as bad as some posters have pointed out. The vice trade has been stamped down on hard and the whole area is covered with a massive amount of cameras which has moved the vice and drug trade further up north to the Caledonian Road.
At any time of night and day you'll find a lot of people about and the main road is a major thoroughfare that is busy with traffic 24 hours a day. The whole KX/Bloomsbury area has the traditional London feel of dark buildings and low level streetlighting which can impart an element of fear. Yes there will be drunks and winos as there are around most mainline stations, ignore them and walk on. If you feel unsafe in KX then I'd argue that you would be equally unsafe on Oxford Street with gangs of Eastern European gypsies and their children slitting handbags.
There shouldn't be a problem getting off the tube and walking back to the Royal Scot or the Travelodge. The man without a signature.0 -
I'd ignore what most people here are saying as they clearly haven't been to King's Cross for a good five years (if at all). It was a very sketchy place a few years back but, having lived about five minutes away from the thameslink station for the past year, it's clearly not like that anymore. As has been mentioned above, there's been a massive redevelopment and the drug dealers and prostitutes have moved elsewhere. I live with my 23 year old girlfriend and neither her, nor her 17 and 25 year old sisters, have ever felt worried walking from the station at night.
There's an abundance of hotels in northern Bloomsbury (just south of King's Cross station) which will be fine as well or the Premier Travel Inn on York Way is an alternative.0
