Ubuntu 10.04 - anyone else trying it out?

Yes, I've upgraded to the beta Netbook Edition on my Dell Mini 10. I did want to try out the Kubuntu version, but it didn't seem to work for me.
And it's so much nicer looking; the social networking integration is a little bit confusing to me though.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
ive used the new ubuntu, i must say i really like it, i prefer the old KDE 3 version of kubuntu, but tbh ive had no end of trouble getting the disk image to boot on ANY machine, and yes its burned it right and yes the MD5 sums match perfectly, so i dunno, anyway, the only problem i have is constant crashed from the IM program, meaning every 2 minutes or so i get disconnected then reconnected, which annoying when trying to chat to anyone, apparently people say its due to having yourself on your own contact lists, but i have multiple accounts so im always on my own contact list :P
other than that i think its nice and tidy. if i wasnt having so much trouble with my pc i would stick to using it.0 -
Just a brief update on this thread, having loaded 10.04 LTS on my ancient 1.2Ghz PIII based laptop - they have improved performance on old hardware like this significantly. From the GRUB menu to the login screen takes only about 25s, which is way faster than Karmic, and CPU usage is more efficient (e.g. previously just looking at System Monitor in fullscreen used to take 40% CPU, but this is now down to about 14%).
One other welcome update: they seem to have added more mobile broadband dongle support. I plugged in my (very cheap) 3 Mobile ZTE MF627 in and it was detected ok, then just 3 or 4 questions in the setup wizard and it just works. This is a major improvement over previous releases, where you had to install a USBmodeswitch module and several other bits and pieces to get it working...0 -
fwor, I'm not stalking you mate!
Should have known better, tried to update, took 2 hours, only thing missing was the ability to boot into Win 7, even though it was still there in grub menu.
I tried various things, ended up reinstalling.
I use it for surfing/ email and storing a bit of music, so no real hardship.
It seems even quicker than Karmic, cannot comment on wireless or graphics cards.
Only thing I've changed so far, is the Firefox theme because I couldn't see the temperatures in Forecastfox, black on black.
Now have Mozilla sky.
The purple desktop is a bit more cheerful than the previous mud.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

That's the trouble I've been having with Karmic.
Wondering why my CPU usage is up at 100% when struggling to watch video.
Only to find out that when I close System Monitor everything calms down. :mad:Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
I may get round to trying it out at some point, i just need to sort out the other hard drive and get it set up0

It was exactly the same for me with Karmic, and at least 2 previous releases. I could get the usage down to 40% by dropping SM's screen refresh rate to 5s (default is every second), but 10.04 apparently has a completely rewritten hardware abstraction layer which I suspect may be the reason for the big improvement this time.
spud: I've now stopped doing dist-upgrades for the reason that you mention. Although I've never had any complete disasters from upgrades, there always seems to be something that doesn't work out quite right. I seem to get better results from skipping a few releases (e.g. I never put Karmic on my main PC) and then doing fresh installs.0 -
Agree, I'd tried Feisty, Gutsy and Hardy, then sort of gave up, but Karmic was a huge leap forward, and I was confident of a seamless transition.I seem to get better results from skipping a few releases (e.g. I never put Karmic on my main PC) and then doing fresh installs.
I must say I'd never noticed any high cpu usage, even with the trusty Athlon 2400 and 768mb ram.
I've got a bit different machine now though.
