Have you tried a Ubuntu Live CD recently? Ubuntu does include a number of proprietary and other wireless drivers in the more recent versions, and a test with a Live CD would be easy.
Sorry, yes I try them as they appear and no, even the most recent doesn't do it. There is a fix available but its not complete and I need to be able to rely on it. As and when I upgrade - probably in the summer - I'll be choosing something that will run out of the box but thanks for the suggestion. :(
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

I also know that there will be an issue with the wireless card in the laptop if I was to transfer over to Ubuntu on that.
What wireless card do you have?

My son has installed this on to my laptop and i wish to install windows xp pro back on to the laptop as i dont like it,

now when i try to install windows it say that there is no hard drive?

And you still like Windows more than Ubuntu? It seems to have problems with non Windows partitions. Just boot from your Live [STRIKE]Windows[/STRIKE]Ubuntu CD, delete all partitions and try it again.

Intel Pro/Wireless 2915abg. The Intel driver has been included in releases based on kernel 2.6 (IIRC) and above. However, whilst the card shows up as present I cannot toggle on/off as this option is greyed out and isn't on as default. Checked card is active in BIOS and then tried to reinstalling/re-enabling the driver in case of any problems:

sudo modprobe -r ipw2000 [proprietory Intel driver]
    sudo modprobe ipw2000

Still will not enable me to turn the wireless on. And yes the card works fine in Windoze so it isn't a hardware issue.

UPDATE: That was the last time I tried - about 6 months or so ago. Ran live cd earlier on again and it found the wl card without issue. Ubuntu 9.10 now installed but spent the rest of the day tweaking it the way I like it. Good suggestion candtalan.

Just interested if anyone is trying it out?

I love it and can't wait for the final release end of this month - I am finally going to get rid of ms windows altogher - YAY!

I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux but found it pretty easy so far - but any experts here that can help in the future identify yourselves :D

    Joe

I'm running it for about two or three weeks now and it runs quite well overall. The crashes are getting fewer and fewer and if there was a crash it only effected the crashed program, not Ubuntu. Didn't have a crash for the last couple of days though. But as somebody else said, I wouldn't run it on a production system.

I "converted" more than 2 years ago and didn't miss Windows a single minute. Some people find Ubuntu easy to operate, but don't switch because program xyz doesn't exist there. But there is a replacement for almost everything in Ubuntu, some programs are maybe not as good as the comparable Windows program, but many of them much better. Some you don't even need under Linux such as Registry Cleaner, Defragger, Malware Remover, etc... When I read half the threads here in this forum I could almost laugh if it wouldn't be so sad.

After getting more and more familiar with Ubuntu I finally replaced Windows MCE on my media center in favor of MythTV on Ubuntu. And believe me, MythTV plays in another league... ;)

You can run a full copy of Windows in Ubuntu using the free VMWare Player. Might be useful for someone who wants to run Linux but has some Windows apps they cannot replace (and has a copy of Windows they can install obviously). With the "Unity" mode Windows applications integrate fairly seamlessly into the Linux desktop.

Or you can use VirtualBox which is comparable with VMWare Workstation, but is free for personal use.

I used to use VMWare Player some time ago but always run into problems with every kernel update. You always had to wait until they released a new version. VirtualBox takes care of this by automatically recompiling all kernel modules. Maybe VMWare does the same now too, haven't used it in a while...

Might be worth trying. The only reason I need Win7 is for HD video and Skype (talk to family in Australia).

Why is this a reason for not switching? Skype runs on Ubuntu as well although it is one or two versions behind, but who cares ;-) it works. And HD video shouldn't be a problem too...

Yes before you actually didn't have to wait for an update, but you did have to re-run the installer to force it to recompile the necessary modules - which given how frequently they update the kernel gets tedious. The current version does this automatically though. It also now can create virtual machines rather than simply "play" them, so is now a far more useful application.
