Just to add my two penneth to the washing your washing machine debate:
The Ecover site used to recommend running your machine, empty, on a 60 degree cycle, with 200ml of Vinegar to clean it. They said to do this once every three months whatever kind of washing powder/liquid/ball you bung in your wash! I've been doing this for a couple of years now and have recently done this to my friend's VERY gungy machine and we've both noticed a difference in the way our machines wash clothes.
Hope that helps :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -

Do you put the vinegar in the place where the powder normally goes, in the fabric softener bit or straight into the machine?
Is the general feedback that the eco-balls aren't really anymore effective than just washing with warm water alone? I have heard that before but the balls do sound very tempting.0 -
I usually just put the vinegar in the drawer where you'd put fabric softener, but you could just pour it straight into the drum I suppose.0

If you put vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer, it won't be added until the last rinse, so it seems a bit pointless to do if you want to clean the machine.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Ive got the ecoball kit.
Its okay for ordinary washes but not heavily stained or VERY dirty.
I got mine so that we could use the water from laundry , on the garden.
Towels etc do come out feeling soft rather than hard when washed without any soap. Im guessing the balls do help agitate the clothes so would help the wash even if they were empty .0 -

I bung the vinegar in the powder draw so it gets in at the beginning :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
I'm with culpepper on this debate. I have the eco laundry balls and find the washing comes out clean but it sometimes needs some Ecover liquid or soda crystals, or the Ecover Stain Remover is very effective. I tend to alternate the different things.
Great tip about the vinegar to clean it - I'm going to try that one. Thanks0 -
Cleaning the washing machine by putting vinegar in and doing a full empty cycle works fantastic
We've never cleaned ours in years but, the machine did smell foisty and mouldy
The machine smells like new now and the washing smells great - a whole lot better
I've been telling people at work about this tip.
Thank you and I highly recommend it to everyone.Proudly Banking & Saving With:
