  • The drier ball cut my drying time by 1/2. my machine has a timer on so i know how long it should take. I got a couple of sets from poundland last year and i think they are as good as the 'proper' ones. They had to stop selling them for a time but they are back on the shelves now

Why are so many people using a tumble dryer at all?? I have a fantastic airer from IKEA that holds two to three loads of laundry, and takes up just two square feet of floor space.

I try to use my occasionally rather than regularly but that's because I have room for an airer, hanging rail and I have radiators. I also live on the 'dry side' of Britain now. In days gone by, when I've been washing for six people in a house with no radiators, and living on the rainy side of Britain, tumble drying was part of my life.

I agree that if there are only three or four people, especially if you have little ones, an airer is quite workable, but for large families, it needs more room and somewhere stuff will dry in less than a couple of days.
