The first time I got engaged was really boring, I think I was taken to a shop to pick a ring as it was my 21st and we'd just got a house together. Didn't last and I left within a year.

Then a couple of months later I bumped into a friend who worked in my dept (but I didn't know this at the time - massive company). He asked me on a date and I nearly didn't go as I was still a bit off men at the time due to the previous break up.

On the date we saw his dad whilst in town and DH introduced me as the girl he was going to marry, and that was sort of it. We were married within a year and have been married happily for the last 14 years.

But I didn't get an engagement ring until we were married 10 years. We were skint when we married and it was the last of our priorities so when we decided to go on holiday to celebrate 10 yr anniversary and he bought me a lovely engagement ring 'just to make things proper'. That was probably one of my most special moments. :)
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x

Got engaged on 13th February this year, on the beach near my house, my favourite place in the whole world... :D
We'd gone for a walk and he had stopped momentarily to draw our initials inside a heart in the sand (after we'd seen some others similar to ours), and he was kneeling down to do so... then said 'Oh, by the way, while I'm down here...' and pulled out the very ring we'd seen (& loved) in the window of an antique shop the week before, which he'd had all cleaned up and resized to fit. I was completely in shock but so happy!
I only learnt later that he was planning on asking me on Valentine's Day (I'd already said to him that I would say no in principle, as it was far too cheesy asking on that day), but after he'd been running around sorting the ring out, and then asking my mum for permission, he decided he couldn't wait a whole day until the 14th... so it turns out that the 13th can be lucky after all:rotfl:
We're getting married in May next year, can't wait :j
don't let the b*stards get you down or you might have to live in a bin - <<< this could be you! :)
  • with me just after giving birth to our second child, he came home from work really late so we had a take away. What do you reckon??? (i played along and talked about the chinese take away)) lol:rotfl:. then finally got it out of him he was talking about marriage;) he said - we might as well get on with it and make it official after 7 years of being together :)

Over dinner in a lovely local restaurant with candles and violin music in the background - well that's what we always told the kids :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Actual proposal was in bed4 months after we had started going out after 'ahem' a bit of "ladies and gentlemen" - I said yes but the next morning when we woke up said if he hadn't meant it we could pretend he hadn't asked ;). He obviously did as we've been married 23 years this year !

It was the Friday evening of the August bank holiday weekend 1994. We were both still students, about to go into our final year, and had just spent the last year(-ish!) apart - him in the US and me in Europe, on our "year out", although had obviously kept in touch by phone and letter (well, I had written to him regularly...he sent me a Christmas card, a birthday card and 1 postcard during our time apart - but for him, that was not bad as written communication goes!!).

I was working my summer job in a local daffodil bulb factory (glamorous...not!! :p), and came home covered in dust and grime. He was coming across from his parents home 120 miles away to stay for the weekend, and my parents had gone out for the evening (although Mr P had phoned my father earlier in the afternoon to ask his permission - and received the go ahead...!).

However, my Mum's friend's daughter was getting married the following day, and my parents had agreed that the groom's parents, and brother, pregnant sister-in-law and toddler nephew could stay with us for the weekend because they had a couple of spare rooms. As Mum and Dad were out for the evening, Mr P and I became responsible for welcoming our guests...

Apart from the fact that they all talked for Britain and didn't seem to want to go to bed for hours, the groom's mother had starched her dress (:undecided?!) but using an old can of spray starch, and when she unpacked it, there were greasy-looking spots all over it! She was distraught because she hadn't brought anything "spare" with her and the whole event was going to be "ruined"!!!

Mr P and I stayed up, soaked her spotty dress in stain remover, put it through a very gentle wash cycle in the machine and then spent hours ironing it (it had a box-pleated skirt, and with the best will in the world, we were only two 21 year old students, so it was not a quick job!! _pale_) while she went to bed and we hoped her puffy eyes would have subsided by the morning...

Finally, well after midnight, with the spot-less outfit finally on a hanger, worn out with coo-ing over the ("not-very-adorable" in our eyes - well, like I said, we were 21 year old students!) toddler, and absolutely exhausted with hearing various versions of the best man's speech (in which none of the proposed jokes were remotely funny... :wall:), we collapsed in a heap in the lounge, alone at last. And so, the "romantic proposal" Mr P had planned became me curled up on one end of the sofa and him on one knee in front of me, asking if I would marry him... Seemingly, he had been waiting on tenterhooks for hours, and having told my parents that he planned to ask me that evening, was not willing to deviate from his plan any longer.

Obviously, there was no question about his suitability as far as I was concerned - this was a man who'd just spent an hour helping me iron box-pleats into nasty floral crimplene...if we could get through that together, a lifetime of marriage should be no problem!!!

    P x
(14yrs of marriage and counting...and no, I don't own any floral crimplene, any box-pleats, or a can of spray starch - so we are still very happy together!! :D:rotfl:).

We were visiting friends in Barcelona and it was the last night of our stay. We went for a walk along Las Ramblas and my OH dropped to one knee and told me he loved me, would I marry him? Of course I said yes :) It wasn't a total surprise though as we'd talked about it a lot and I had a feeling he might ask me while we were on holiday (it had become a running joke between us!)

He later told me that although he was planning to ask me, he hadn't planned on doing it in Barcelona so it was a bit spur of the moment and he didn't have the ring yet! He always wears a silver ring so he gave me that to wear until we came home and then we went to get the ring. My OH had picked out a couple of rings before we went away so he showed them me and told me which one he thought I'd like best. Luckily it WAS the one I liked best and it was in my size!

Still need to set a date though!

We were on a football weekend away with our mates and decided to go up the blackpool tower (every year we'd been there before it was raining or cloudy or something). So it was clear and we all went up.

Got to the very top and it was FREEZING! In full ski jacket and wooly hat and still completely frozen. Him being the keen photographer was taking as many photos as possible, and I soon noticed the others had gone down. At which point I told him I was going as it was cold. He told me not to and ahem 'kissed' me. I assumed he was after a sneaky grope (lol) and then he dropped to one knee!

It was perfect as it was in an amazing location but it was just the 2 of us :)

And to keep in the theme of our high places we've decided to get married on the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge :)
