DIY computer repairs

I got asked to look at my local chemists PC the other day.
I went into the chemist and within 5 minutes I had diagnosed the problem.
The machine was delivered to me at 2pm on the afternoon for repair. I took it apart done some tests with a multimeter, to confirm my suspisions, had a cup of tea, fitted a test part and ran a few tests, estimated the repair cost and rang the chemist at 2.30, to confirm they wanted the repair done and the price was ok......
By 3.15 I had been to Maplin to buy the new part, fitted it and had the machine up and running on the desk at the chemists......
Moral of the story....
Some people are cut out for repairing computers, some people are good at accounting, some people are good at digging trenches all day.......
If you are unsure of what you are doing whilst attempting to repair your £700 laptop, or £500 desktop. Let someone else look at it that knows what they are doing.........:D

P.S. the people in the know on here know exactly which part I replace from the description I gave, if you dont know which part I changed, you should read up more, or just leave it alone.....

  • From your description it could be one of many faults. Well done, you have preserved the arcane secrets of the order of geeks.

It was never going to be a Virus on a Chemists' PC.

Good Friday morning, phone call, 'next time you're passing, can you call in, the computers not working'

Bank holiday Monday afternoon, call in, with multimeter, diagnose problem, replace defective item with 2nd hand spare from my shelf to get them going, total time 15 minutes.
Ordered new unit Monday evening and will nip around and fit it at the weekend.

AND the rest of the week I dig trenches and holes, fill them with concrete and steel, then others construct award winning buildings on top, with offices, so that people can sit behind computers and feel superior to the 'thickos' that built the place.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Multimeter to test continuity of the on/off switch??
Went to Maplin to buy a new switch? You used a jumper as the test part to bypass the switch...

That's my guess, probably wrong but you gotta have a go :p

Then you realised that it wasn't the switch that needed replacing and you should have checked the PSU first.....:wall:
