its essential for ringing up and chasing up our benefit and for getting a crisis

also what about accidents, i have two dislocating knees that i need a phone for in case i need to call an ambulance

You can get a PAYG mobile for under a fiver and top up with £5 when its needed, you can phone free from JC+ to chase up JSA etc. and the mobile will cost considerably less than line rental (cheapest £11.49 PM).

You dont need a land line.

yes we do need a land line, the amount i would spend on a PAYG mobile putting credit on and bus fares to get to the job center would be a lot more than line rental

You dont need a land line as the job centre have kindly provided phones at no cost to yourself so you can ring up about jobs, enquire, apply for crisis loans and chase up everything there. Its a pain but its been provided for you.

walk, bus, ride a bike to the job centre...

can only get there by bus and its £3.30 a time which would add up over the month and be a LOT MORE than what we spend on line rental

then add on top of that a PAYG mobile and mobile credit

How far is the job centre from your house?

Ring up from JC then use mobile for incoming calls only.

its quite a bit away, would take well over 2 hours to walk to

i would still need the phone for ringing up for jobs and to ask about vacancies and like i say in case i have an accident

trust me i had a mobile phone and got rid of it as the land line was cheaper

Can you not get the bus partway or ride a bike, dont take this the wrong way but seeing as you don't have a job then you have all day to walk it!

Its not easy being on benefits and its not supposed to be either, you will get enough money to keep a roof over your head and eat, thats it! thats all its designed for.

i have bad knees so no i can not walk it, walk part way or ride a bike

I'm in the same situation, started receiving JSA in January when they received all the papers I sent them then all of a sudden stopped it saying they hadnt received one form. I *KNEW* they had received it because I deliberately put everything in one envelope so they couldnt pull this stunt.

Anyway they stopped my money and told me it was "to make you get in touch with us" I'd actually rung twice querying why I was getting blank forms I'd already supplied but with no covering letter or return address.....

I complained and they eventually agreed they have the form but it needs to go to a decision maker (oh and they wont act on the complaint) until the "decision makers" have spoken and its now 6 weeks since they paid me anything.

I've spenty HOURS chasing it up and they couldnt give 2 figs the attitude is just "well thats the way it is".

To make matters worse the processing centre is directly above my JCP where I sign so I took a letter directly there only to be told it has to be sent to a "sorting centre" 40 miles away to then come back and be delivered upstairs - farcicle.

Add to that the fact they appoint a JCP based on Local Authority not distance from your home to the nearest office, and the infuriating refusal to leave a message for you when they get your answerphone and its clearly an organisation in need of change! I just hope whichever Government comes next looks at the ridiculous long winded practices

Sorry for going on - rant over! I hope you get sorted quickly but DO complain they report on numbers of complaints and our voices need to be heard.

    Hi

Sorry, I don't know a lot about this but I just wanted to post with my support. You seem to have had a hard time from people on this forum because you're worried about the phone being cut off which I think is very harsh. The issue is that you've not had any money coming in in 7 weeks, if you had posted saying you didn't have enough money to buy food I bet it would have been a very different response.

The only thing I can suggest is to google about hardship payments and maybe ask the jobcentre if you qualify for them
